I have it in one of my perennial beds but I know it needs more moisture than what it gets there. It hasn't bloomed for the past couple of years (drought). I've decided this year, I'm going to pot it up and sink it in the pond.

Hi byrdlady, I have the red & blk & blue la iris growing & blooming in my garden for about 3 yrs.I also have jap iris & siberian iris and they all do great.they like alot of water........ Diane

I've got some growing in my pond and boggy area and they love it. Part shade and they still bloom for me.

Plopped them into a 2 ftX2ft spot of soil at gutter dowspout and they bloom up around a Texas star hibiscus. One is 'Game Cock'. Others I don't remember, but colors are gorgeous.

Thanks for responding..... should I get Louisana or Japanese iris? Which do you prefer?

I haven't had much luck with Japanese Iris here. Louisianas and Psuedacorus grow well here. You can probably grow both in your area. Black Gamecock is one of the more cold tolerant varieties.

I had them at a previous house. I planted them at the edge of the creek and they did great. Mine were blue and bred by Colleen at Lilywell Flower Farm in Hillsborough. I don't know if she still has a garden nursery or not.

Thanks for your replies! I have had good luck with Japanese iris (see below). I found a source on ebay of a gal that sells them. She sold me a package of 6 different kinds...... they looked great until that bad frost recently. I am hoping the roots were not hurt.

I grow a lot of Japanese irises in my rain garden. They are just starting to emerge green for June blooms. I leave the old foliage growth until the frost zaps it in winter.

The deer will nibble the open blooms, but not the buds or foliage (so far in 3 years).

I just read my last post.... not enough coffee. I meant to say I bought a LOUISIANA iris asst. from a LA garden off ebay. That is what got nipped by our last frost.
