Do you want stained wood cabinets or painted? In some ways painted cabinets might give you more options. You could put in white oak floors and a light color painted cabinet (white, cream, gray, pale olive, etc., maybe in a simple Shaker style if you want something classic) and have a beautiful look with your oak trim. I love open kitchens by the way. We took down an exterior wall to build a great room that is continuous with our kitchen. Best decision we ever made.

I like a creamy white for the cabinets, hardwood floors, Carrera marble for counters, and a deep or pop of bright color for the island base for a really timeless look. I also think integrated appliances are more timeless than stainless/ The color of your island, the style of your cabinet doors, hardware and faucets can make this combination go any direction you choose from cottage to traditional to contemporary. Clip photos of kitchens you like and circle what appeals to you in them....as well know what you do not like. Take you time and enjoy the process; you will be living with your decisions for a long time. :)
