Can I get away with dark gray walls??

In a few years this space will be all kitchen. Until then, I have NO IDEA what to do as far as paint, window treatments, tables, where to put the furniture, etc. Need to keep the couch, love seat, and carpet! (Those will all be professionally cleaned after I paint, so don't mind the sofa from the kids)
I like neutral colors, and crisp clean look. Can I do a dark gray in this room with the natural oak woodwork? I would LOVE to change the color of baseboards and around window but my husband would kill me!
ANY help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I agree with Emily Hurley. Those are great examples to follow! Clean and sophisticated.

I really prefer white trim with grey for myself, but that doesn't mean it has to be that way. Here's a couple examples. It's probably just about finding the "right grey".

I love those examples you found, Emily. Notice that the ceiling in the second picture is painted grey.

Try Benjamin Moore 2108-50 Silver Fox, a lovely warm gray. Add a square coffee table, a round end table and a bigger lamp. Select some colorful pillows that complement the art. Add a red or yellow rug.

I also prefer white woodwork. I think that this room would look great in dark gray. I also agree with Carolyns suggestions and I would also change the heavy drapes to something softer. Let the light shine in.

Grey would look great! Just pick one that has a warmer undertone that compliments the trim and the carpet which is there to stay...for now.

Yes, I would also change the window treatment if you need on at all. I could see a transparent roller shade set inside or maybe just hang a tortoise bamboo roman shade outside the frame as close to the celling/wall.

My wife redid my office last year in a dark gray Benjamin Moore paint and it has never looked better. It takes a bit of moxy to do, but looks great when it's in place.

Benjamin Moore has 2 beautiful dark greys..."Black Pepper" and "Almost Black"
Both work well with other neutrals and then pop in something bright orange or yellow for a great accent. I would do translucent white roller shade (like MeccoShade) and no curtains for a clean, modern look.

Thank you soo much for all the great ideas!! Would you suggest painting all the way up to the peak? (where it now looks like a triangle) Also, I love the dark grays, would you do all three walls??

Also, in the last picture...would you get rid of the vase and twigs?? Would a little chair or ottoman type piece work there to help balance out the room?

Yes, paint it all! I would also remove the drapes and just leave the transparent blinds. Above the closet (the last pic) leave just one or three (an odd number of) like items in the tallest part of the pitch.
I say not to the chair or ottoman but yes to a coffee table.

Emily-Thank you for the pictures-I feel better about doing it now! I also think white trim would be the best, and I thought maybe I could get away with doing white trim in there only (without sending hubby into cardiac arrest) but after reading many post and comments on this sight I am hearing that your trim work should be the same throughout the house?

winkela- LOVE the Mecco Shades-thats on the list! I would love to leave that window with nothing on it, but can't for two reasons! New neighbors across the street like to sit on their front porch and be nosey, and the afternoon sun comes in there and it gets HOT!!

I pulled up all the paint colors that everyone suggested, and they all look really blue?? However you never get the true color on a computer-I wrote down all the colors and will be going to look at them in person! Thanks again to all!!
