Glass countertops are very IN for kitchens and baths. What is not IN is two level countertops where most of the countertop is at the standard height of 36" and then the bar is raised to 42" or so. That's definitely OUT, unless it's done as an add on during a remodel instead of replacing existing countertops. Then it can look quite chic if well done (see below). But having all one level allows for a much more open look in the room, and allows for a larger continuous countertop which is quite useful for many things.

Glass is great! Although the high bar top may be "OUT" as Carolyn mentioned it really depends on where you live and of course what your structure/layout will allow. Down here in Jacksonville Florida we have 60% High bars and more recently the one level Islands and Peninsulas going in. We may be behind the times but that is all I can compare it to. Even the new construction plans still plan for high bars. Good Luck!!

i agree that the 42" bar height is out. as for counter materials here in canada we have been using a really cool recycled glass by a company called glass2. for a seperate bar area you can use back lighting for a super cool look.

I get the impression from photos I see on houzz of interiors in Canada that you designers up there are on the cutting edge of things! Keep up the good work and keep posting cool pictures.

I think glass countertop would be a great compliment to conventional granite or solid surfaces. I wouldn't use it as the main work space though.

Call your local glass companies. I know that Anchor Ventana in Austin does them and I would expect that most other glass companies can do them too.

what about scratches? is there a special finish or application that will help make them more scratch resistant?

It is glass and it will scratch.

How about a gorgeous wooden slab for the countertop to add a natural element into your kitchen.
