Bluespruce53..... A Question

In the photo of Abies nordmanniana 'Golden Spreader' on your on-line photo album, what is the tall pine cultivar to the visual right of the A. n. 'Golden Spreader'? It is beautiful.

Thanks!

Do you mean this photo ? The plant is Pinus nigra 'Komet' there is another cultivar called 'Green Tower' which is similar.

This is the plant a couple of years earlier, with new growth in spring. Poor quality photo, sorry.

    Very, very nice!

Now the question is 'Where do I find it in the U.S.?'

    Anybody got any clues?

    Thanks!

"Here it is again, shaded out to the left, photo taken December 07"
Looks like it has lost its leader since the previous photo?

"Now the question is 'Where do I find it in the U.S.?'"
Quite likely nowhere; US import regulations are similar to those of the EU, with live foliage and plants of Pinaceae species are prohibited entry. Thus the transfer of new cultivars from one continent to another is illegal. It would only be available if imported before current regulations came into force.

i found frank in the US ...the plant i mean ...

marker.. didnt you just admit ACS?

if so .. dont get caught up in names per se .... you dont need a specific named plant .. as there are usually look alikes ...

its all a matter of becoming a catalog rat .. lol ... and mail ordering all across the country ....

    ken

my frank has a way to go

    Thanks, Ken, my friend.

You are indeed correct. Time to self-medicate with a little catalog absorption.

I would like to know about U.S.-available look-alikes to P.n. 'Komet.' Aaah, I might as well go ahead and ask for photos, too.

    Many thanks.

    Bluespruce53 -

I read a description on P.n. 'Komet' which said that the needles are lime green and about 1 1/2 inches long. Does that sound correct? It seems as if your photo shows needles much longer.

    Curious.

    Thanks!

But the correct spelling is 'fastigiate'.

yikes ..... you mean spelliung counts ..... lol .... ken

    Plant & ken,
I only have a young plant of P. nigra Frank, so comparison for me is limited. I would guess however that P. nigra 'komet is stronger/faster growing with darker longer needles, slightly curved, about 3 inches in length, buds more prominent. Plantmaker - if you do have ACS syndrome and start collecting, then lookalikes sometimes will not do!. Resin - there is no leader loss on the plant in the photo.

    Thanks, bluespruce53 -

I'm left slightly confused now. Staney & Sons description of P. n. 'Komet' indicates that it has 1.5" needles, half the size of your plant. It goes on to say that the leaves are lime green and that the growth rate is 2"-3" per year.

The description just doesn't seem to match what I see in your photo, especially the long needle length and the deep green color (which, though, can be attributed to many things by the time the image gets to my monitor.)

Stanley & Sons describes P. n. 'Arnold's Sentinel' as having very long needles.

    P. n. 'Frank' is described as having a dwarf, tight, columnar form, with a growth rate of 8" a year.

Plantmaker -There is always the chance that I might have the wrong plant, it wouldn't be the first time. but with all due respect to Larry Stanley plant names and descriptions in his catalogue are sometimes questionable.

For those who grow P. n. 'Obelisk', can you describe its appearance (needle length, growth pattern, color, etc.) and its growth rate?

Bluespruce53, what is the growth rate of P. n. 'Green Tower'?

    Many thanks!

"i have a fastigate picea pungens which is also nice .. sold as iseli fastigate ... can you guess the wholesaler ... lol ... aka blue totem according to the sages here.. 2 names.. same plant .. go figure".

A small correction on the naming of the conifer. Iseli Fastigiate and Wells "Blue Totem" are not the same tree. The Blue Totem remains more upright growing while the Iseli Fastigiate will tend to have its branches lay a bit more open.

Interesting Dave. This debate is officially off my agenda.

Plantmarker -Pinus nigra 'Green Tower' would be somewhere around 5 feet tall after ten years.
