soil question...

Been looking through the posts about turface and mixes and whatnot. There's sooo much info on it. If someone is able to dumb it down for me it would be much appreciated.

The contents i'm workin with are:

Napa oil dri

cactus and succulent mix from the big box store

perlite

schulze c&s fert ( with micros)

a few questions:

if i wanted to do 100% turface, how often do i water and fertilize?

most of my plants are in about 50% turface, 40%c&s mix, and 10% perlite, should I switch them out for something else or do u think they will be okay with what they're in??

If we dumb it down for you, no good will come of it. The more you understand, the better off you and your plants will be. If it were as easy as offering a quick soil recipe, everyone would be growing successfully - but that is far from the case.

We cannot possibly answer a question such as "how often do I water" without understanding what you are growing, where you are growing it, and what kind of conditions are they in. If a being from another planet came to earth and asked "how often do humans drink water?" - well, you wouldn't be able to answer that either. Get the point?

As a general rule, Turface holds onto water longer than other substrates while simultaneously maintaining excellent aeration. But - depending on what you grow and on the water supply, it might be too much of a good thing.

Also, Turface provides zero nutrition so in a 100% mix the grower is responsible for complete nutrition, as in hydroponics except that the physics are different. This is another topic that is beyond the scope of a singular post.

Again, the proportions you describe might be perfectly suitable but it depends on what your goals are. I hate to be vague but there's no way to give you the answer you want.

I see you are located in Florida so right off the bat I can tell you that you should probably use a higher % of non-porous "drainage" type substrate (ex - perlite) to counteract the long, hot, humid, wet periods in the South.

This forum is excellent when people ask a specific question about a particular aspect of plants or their growth. For broad topics like watering or fertilizing, your best bet would be to continue reading old posts despite your reluctance, and then ask us a specific question that you wish clarified.

    X is right.

Not all plants are going to use the same mix, or all be watered and cared for the same.

It would help to know what you are growing.

We have a few members here in Florida, and they struggle with the humidity, even with a good gritty mix.

It's my understanding that turface isn't meant to be mixed in a comercial mix either.

The link below is a great one to read to get an understanding of container soils, and how the gritty mix works, which is what you will probably need in Florida.
