Lithops from seeds

This picture shows a $1.99 lithop seed mixture from an eBay seller that I planted September 25 following the instructions included in the package. The pot is on my south window sill succulent shelf. The largest seedling sprouted about a week after planting and was the only one for several weeks when I decided to email the seller and complain about the low germination rate of 30 seeds planted. Luckily, I checked the pot before sending the email and noticed about five more had germinated. Now there are about 15 which isn't bad at all for a pot on a window sill.

They are so little and cute! I'm figuring out how to care for the two I have but I'd love to start some from seed!

Nice! That's pretty good germination rate I think for these guys. I haven't started any plants from seeds, must be kinda fun to try one day though... again, when I have the space!

very nice. i've never used e-bay but i like doing seeds-is there a special e-bay dept. hope you'll excuse my lack of knowledge.

It is a little difficult to recommend eBay to someone who is not familiar with it. Registration is required and I believe a PayPal account also. Here is a link to eBay for which I specified USA sellers. I usually pick a seller who offers "Buy it Now" rather than an auction format. Also, compare shipping charges. My seeds totaled about $4.50.

And finally, I forgot to mention seller feedback. I rarely buy from a seller with a less than 99.5% positive feedback.

I started some lithops seeds from seedrack.com about 3 weeks ago in a takeout soup container. The mix is cactus mix, pumice, and a little playground sand sprinkled on top for them to grab onto as they right themselves. They're inside of a clamshell takeout tray to keep everything moist. Here's their current progress:

Well, out of 15 seedlings, four survived and were transplanted today. I probably over watered the seedlings but four is alright.

Living rocks is an appropriate common name

bouldergrower, how are these guys doing? I have been reading your posts with enthusiasm, and thinking about picking up some seeds myself this fall. Would love to know how this turned out, your succulents sure seem to love you!

The succulents have been outside on a south facing patio protected from rain and direct sun but in very bright light since early June.

The latest Home Depot lithops slowly "bit the dust". The three surviving lithop seedlings are doing fine and my original one from Home Depot just hangs in there looking like it did the day I bought it over a year ago.

Bouldergrower, I saw a Pleiospilos even bigger than yours yesterday at a nursery - it was a behemoth, I was so surprised.

It's a lot of fun watching your little ones grow. The bigger one, maybe just a little frustrating that it doesn't change at all!

Looking great! Can I ask which eBay seller if you remember? There is one from China I am considering because the seeds are so cheap but have some concerns on ordering internationally.

    This was the eBay seller:

    She does include growing instructions.

I am going to dig up the Pleiospilos this fall when I bring the plants inside for the winter and see if it can be divided. It is getting too big.

What kind and how much fertilizer are you using on your plants? They look so lush and healthy!

I don't use any fertilizer at all. The Miracle Gro Cactus, Palm, Citrus mix has some fertilizer in it and I use it in my potting mix with an equal part of coarse sand.

    Not fast growers

Since this is a community pot I am just pouring about three tablespoons of water on the center of the Haworthia and Fenestraria once a week while waiting for the Pleiospilos and the old Lithop to complete their leaf withering cycle

. The Pleiospilos has almost completed the withering of the two original leaves. The Lithop seems to be taking forever for the old leaves to wither. The three surviving Lithop seedlings are doing fine. It takes a sharp eye to distinguish them from the rocks.

So, discussing lithops from seed, I have a bunch of little seedlings right now (like a month old). And just today, I noticed part of the top sand layer getting a greenish hue? Is this a fungus and how can I treat it?

Probably algae if not fuzzy? Maybe your seedling conditions are just a bit too damp.

I found when using perlite it can grow algae sometimes, but sand less likely to do so (in my own limited experience).

That would make sense, since it isn't fuzzy.. Should I just scoop it out and take it easy on the watering?

Bella - Maybe post to a new thread with photos? Be easier to do it that way!

Bouldergrower - Always enjoying your updates to this thread. One day I hope my Fenestraria grows big and nice enough as yours. =)
