Jade pruning

I know there is an abundance of info about pruning a jade plant. But I have yet to find an answer to my question...which is: The woody stem of my Jade has many "v" joints with branches spreading out. They are getting very heavy and I am concerned that they will split naturally thus causing damage to the plant. Can I prune off a woody stem branch of my Jade and if so, how? Will it root like the green stem sections I often prune and reroot?
