Picea sitchensis parade

Give the relative lack of Sitka spruce cultivars, feel free to post images of your cultivars, even if it has already been posted. I'd love to see some older specimens of these beauties.

I'll take some photos today, another perfect day here.

A beaut Dave -- how old, if you don't mind ? (Thnx)

I'm growing one here in Montreal, but it seems to be rather slow -- I suspect it may be near its zone limit here....

I have 'Thomas' growing here in zone 5 NH (suppose to be a z6 conifer) and coming out of the winter untouched. I like it !

Hi Will, namecheck! Picea sitchensis 'Vapenka' it's a czech cultivar not a spanish one :0)

    Thanks Blue!

You know what's funny - when I first wrote this thread, I listed it as 'Vapenka' before changing it to what was written on it's U.S. tag. Apparently my mind felt 'Vapenka' felt more appropriate.

And let's see 'em, I know you have a LOT of cool little Sitka's to share. :)

    Resin,

Just the coolest name for "your" trees.

    "Here's some older ones . . . Picea sitchensis 'Nature's Intention'" ;-)

There's old resin...having some fun again.

Can't beat a natural setting like that.

Just curious.... are there any Witch's Brooms in existence that are NOT 'Nature's Intention' ?
....presumably these would be artificially induced by nurseries ? ...using chemicals ?? ....recombinant DNA techniques ??

    Jaro...probably 10 + years.

Hi. I only have 'Papoose'; as two have been posted already, I won't add to that.
Resin...floorboards in the making? Or is it palletwood or going to be paperpulp? Is that a forestry plantation in the UK ? T.

Will, according to the Holata site 'Trinket' and 'Papoose' are the same plant, with Trinket being the redundant name, can anyone confirm this please.

Jaro, I've read that the timber industry routinely creates modified conifers (e.g. zap seeds with gamma radiation) in an attempt to develop enhanced trees. It's possible some of these have thrown brooms?

Thanks for the observation on the Sitka, looks like a close call for my zone as well (but still worth a try).

    Stephen,
Also the World Checklist of Conifers mentioned that 'Trinket' is a superfluous synonym for 'Papoose'

    'Pevé Wiesje'

Found as a witches'broom by Piet Vergeldt from Holland.
Pevé is a shortening of his name.

    Thanks!! ;-)

Hi Tunilla - yep, a forestry plantation. Most do go for pulp and pallets, but these are large enough for high-value sawlogs if/when they ever get cut.

PS this is a brief visit to GW from the public library today; a thunderstorm knocked out my internet access y'day, not sure when I'll be back regular.

picea sitchensis 'Silberzwerg': this plant lost a lot of needles because of aphids (I think) a couple of years ago but has come back strong again this year.

Picea sitchensis 'Silberzwerg' was formerly known as 'Nana Oltmans' but this name was illegitimate because it was found after 1959, to be pricese in 1972.
The founder af this witches'broom is Georg Oltmans from Ekern, Germany.
