Please tell me......

......I'm not the only one. Went shopping for a lattice panel to make trellises for two rambling roses on the back of the shed. I also was looking for two rakes, one wire, good for gravel and one bamboo which I like for certain jobs. Got the lattice panel and wire rake at home depot. Now just next door sits Art Knapp's a garden center I frequent way too often. Do I or do I not look for the bamboo rake? Silly question, of course I do, I'll just whip in and buy the rake and whip right out again.

DH says to me, I'm going to drop you off at the door I want to go to Staples, I'll come back and pick you up. I think O.K. I'll just look at some of the annuals, colors, heights, pricing getting an idea for next years planting.

WRONG! I ran into a sale on all their perennials. My eyes glazed over and before I knew it I was back home with Echinacea Summer Sky, Razzmatazz, Double Decker and Harvest Moon. Shasta Daisies Alaska, Becky and Aglaia. Dianthus King of Blacks, Eastern Star and Raspberry Surprise.

I'm trying to justify this splurge. I need the cone flowers, because they spell cottage to me, the purples because I love the color, the yellow to satisfy my split personality, Summer Sky, a blend, to join my two personalities back into one. The shasta daisies are a no brainer, we all know we need punches of white to make the colors pop. The dianthus, because they are dianthus no other explanation is needed.

Am I alone sitting out here on this branch of no self discipline bending and about to snap, or do I have company?

    You have company.

I went to Home Depot for two bags of potting soil.

I came home with two bags of potting soil, 2 gallon sized Vitex trees, 2 lantana, 4 potato vine, and 2 Varigated privet.

I wish I'd seen some coneflowers, too. The thing is I can use all these, but I hadn't planned on them yet.

Nobody's gonna let me go to the store by myself anymore. :0)

Count me in. Went to Wall-Mart this morning with DD to pick up some bathroom items. Intentionally parked at the garden entrance so I could exclaim "oh since we're here I need to look at the plants". Saw a red fountain grass that I've been wanting...it was only $3.85. They had the most beautiful pot of mixed zinnia's and after drooling over Steven's amazing zinnia's from his post this morning I couldn't resist. Also realized I needed some short fencing to place in front of my drooping asters. DD made the comment that none of those items were on our list. The rice cooker she bought wasn't on the list either, so there! Vikki

No, you are not alone. Went to Parks today & came home with 10 seed packets, 1 tiger canna, 1 white canna, something else I can't remember and loads of bulbs, tubers & dormant plants. The bulbs, tubers & dormants were $1-$2, it was too much to resist. A garden center by my house has had a huge clearance sign up now for a week. How much longer I can resist stopping there I do not know.

Update....I can't win, even at home it's not safe, I just got an email from Garden Import, one of my favorite places to shop. Can you believe this, a new Echinacea for 2007, fragrant, dark magenta-purple flowers atop purple stems clothed in blue green leaves on a DWARF plant 12" tall. Well branched with loads of flowers. Ideal for containers or mass planted for a fragrant carpet. It's name... AFTER MIDNIGHT... Of course I have to buy it. Do they see me coming, or do they see me coming.

Annette -- you will love Harvest Moon. And, it's fragrant, too.

We finished mulching today which signifies the end of my planting for this season. Then, I started talking about creating a bed of buddleia, lavender and ornamental grasses. My husband said "wait until next spring"!

Oh Annette, need you ask? I can't be trusted around a nursery or garden center within a 5 mile radius. There really is no reasoning with me once I get behind the wheel of a shopping cart. They will have pry my debit card from my cold dead fingers.

Well, Annette...at least we aren't buying street drugs.

If I were not so paranoid about money I'd buy a lot more plants. Don't think for a minute I'm not sorely tempted!

Really, though, as long as you aren't emptying the kids' education fund or failing to pay your bills, it's better than a lot of things you could blow your cash on. Right?

    Ha! Ha! Ha!

Today I was out digging a new bed... gotta get those ''holding nursery'' plants in before I buy more. I'm staying at home this weekend and working-a great plan and it worked till about 3,30 this afternoon... the skies opened up and didn't stop. Okay, it's Sunday- quit early, go in, clean up, sit down with a glass of wine... Brrring! Brrring! It's the telephone- my friend Derrick,''I'm at the nursery and they've got a big display of perennials 50% off.'' He lists the selection.
''2 of that, 6 of those, 3 of them'', I reply

Half hour later- Ding Dong! There he is at the door with a hundred dollars of plants. My thoughts go to my almost empty wallet.
''Sorry, couldn't remember if you wanted 6 of these- I got you 10... etc.'' he said
''Oh! and Happy Birthday! Sorry it's a day late.

That ''holding nursery'' is never gonna get emptied!! Even when I stay at home and vow,''No more plants!'' They still come.

It doesn't matter whether I am at the grocery store, a big box store, the 99 cent store or the most expensive nursery in town, if they have plants..I am going to look!

Heck, I even "feed" my compost pile. Once, while in the produce section, I realized that it had been awhile since we had had fresh carrots in the house, and also that my compost pile could use some fresh carrot scrapings. :-)

    Gardening can become addicting!!!!

    yep! me too....
I went to a garden center to just look at plants on Saturday and to see all of the hummingbirds there that have made homes in a little area near the greenhouse. Yeah right.

I know that glaze - it comes over me, and the next thing I knew I was walking to the car with a delphinium, another iris, a globe thistle, verbena, and bush violets. And it wasn't as if I hadn't bought plants that week. The day before I bought pink daylilies and big sky sunrise coneflower and sunflower and viola seeds.

My plan for next spring is to dig up another 10x5 piece of lawn along the driveway. I've purposely crammed the other beds with new things so that I have some divisions to put in this new bed next year. Logical, eh.

I have to practically step on my hands to keep from picking up the spade and starting to dig every time I walk by this patch.

Other sod that I dug up this spring got piled up to form the beginning of a raised bed. I've covered it with soil and seeded it with nasturtiums, APPARENTLY to shade out any stray blades of grass, but the real reason is so that I won't start planting things on it because I can't stand to see an empty spot in the garden.

I have room for more hosta - someone stop me!

it's worse because the sales are starting! My husband & I went for a drive and this nursery was advertising hosta 4 for $20 (which are his fav plant) So we stop and low and behold perennials are .99 and not just the everyday types. Oh and that clematis I wanted and...
$200 later we left and have been planting like crazy to get all the plants in! :)
This weekend we're going to a country market, better start planning where the next ones are going....LOL

Oh, I fell off that branch a loooong time ago. LOL!

Can't wait to see pics of all these beauties in your garden. : )

I have been lurking for a couple of months, but I have to post on this one.

I went to the store about a month ago to get one bag of blood meal. I came home with 9 pink fountain guara grass, 2 russian sage, 2 corkscrew grass, and 9 silver falls (to go with the corkscrew grass in a nice tall skinny container i already have). They had some plants 50% off, so I also got a just budding Strawflower, a youngish lobelia basket, and (happy dance) a smallish variegated Weigela.

I got about halfway home and realized I had forgotten the Blood Meal.

So I stopped at the very nice little garden center at the hy-vee (grocery store) near my house - the garden center is actually done by one of the local greenhouse/nursery centers.

They were having a 25% off everything sale and bulbs for a $1.00 (instead of $4.00!), so I got a couple of hanging baskets of yellow and orange callibrachoa (million bells), 4 tiger lillies, 6 stargazer lillies, and 12 assorted - red, white, yellow.

I again got halfway home and had to turn around. You guessed it, forgot to get the blood meal!!

rnbwgrl.... I believe I have met my match, LOL, I have actually had to turn around and go back once, but not twice. Bye the way a BIG welcome to cottage, Stick around, you'll love it here.

The only way to be out of plant trouble is not to go to *any* sort of shop. Period. Like Marilyn, even if I'm just going to the supermarket for some bread, milk or some fresh fruit, the small table of the florist area boasting a few dozens of pots with annuals is an irresistible lure - and more often than not, a couple of plants find themselves inside the cart struggling for space with the more "rational" purchases :-) Plus there are the seeds, of course, and the bulbs when it's time. All dangling in front of your nose when you're trying to choose the cauliflower. What's a gal to do? Impulse buy is a great driver of the economy. Who am I to try and stop it? LOL!

    This thread is GREAT!!!

Rnbwgrl and Annette...I'm there with you, can't count the number of times I've gone to get something practical from one of the big boxes or the nursery and come home with everything but what I went for. I know Lowes is having a sale and I hear them calling my name. Vikki

Uh oh. I got a letter today from my favorite "country nursery". They mailed it to me with my name on it and a regular stamp and everything. (They seriously know who I am! How did THAT happen?) They are having a HUGE sale this Saturday. Perennials for $3. Everything else 40% to 85% off. Like I said....uh oh. You KNOW where I'm going Saturday morning as fast as my behind can travel, right?

My name is Linda and I'm a "plantaholic".

Annette you are going to love the Summer Sky, I can't believe how beautiful this coneflower is. The flowers are Hugh, and the color is perfect almost terra cotta with a tinge of pink. Mine were in 3" pots and they came back about 3 feet tall. I am guilty of finding plants everywhere I go, I would be in even more trouble if I had one nursery with the selection you mentioned. My temporary excuse now is that the front lawn is 90% gone and I really need plants!

And let's not forget the great finds at the nurseries for the INSIDE of our homes. I love cottage, inside and out, and lean toward a relaxed, garden style, so when I found this {{gwi:700765}} at one of my fav nurseries, well, I just couldn't resist! Here is a {{gwi:700768}} - it hangs between two windows in my living room. And I found this {{gwi:700770}} at the same place - had to have it for my mini tubs. : )

Now I have to run. It's DH's bday. Wonder if I can get out of Lowes with just tools and bypass the plants? Nah! ; )
