Yesterday I saw a program on the Science channel called the science of Christmas. In one segment they were discussing the "super tree". The grower stated that he had grafted what he said (with an accent)was canine fir (I am assuming he meant Canaan fir (Abies balsamea var. phanerolepis))onto Douglas Fir (pseudotsuga menziesii).
Has anyone heard of grafting these two genus'? I wouldn't have thought it possible. I also failed to comprehend what was trying to be acomplished by doing so. The only reasoning I could think was the hopes of a Graft Chimaera arising from the union.
I checked the science channel's web site and the program is to air again on the 31st at 9 am. I'll watch it again, but What do you think? Is it a possible to graft these different genus' or did I mis-understand what was being said?
Here is a link that might be useful: The Science of Christmas
