opinion on loveseat color for bedroom sitting area....

Purchasing a slipcovered sofa from PB for bedroom sitting area (see pics attached of bedroom.)

I don't want white although i typically get white because i already have 2 white slipcovered sofas in the house. i found a nice color named Parchment (it is a twill which is the fabric grade we are picking from) but color is VERY similar to wall color. Think it will be nice or too boring if the same color as the wall? I want to keep the room creamy so might want to add some other touches of white and other textures. thoughts?

It sounds like the color would be pretty, but may disappear a bit with the wall color. If you choose that one, maybe you can accessorize with some other texture with pillows, etc? Also, maybe something on the wall behind the sofa will help keep it from blending into the wall.

If you don't want bold colors and want to keep it neutral then just add some textures and patterns. That will help give your room some dimension. These patterns can be subtle like white on white or cream on white.

I think it would be great! You have dark floors and dark furniture, perhaps you could find some pillows for it that have a nice pattern with dark brown.
i think the room is beginning to look a bit monochromatic. going with one of the darker browns might be a good idea to give the room some contrast. and you can always bring the creams and whites back in with accent pillows!

A monocromatic rug with beige, and tan in it to replace the two in the room. As mentioned earlier use texture and patterns in the room to bring character and interest to the space. Nice room. Add subtle texture and pattern in the pillow cases or shams, add a darker color blanket folded at the edge of the bed. Above the headbord is screaming for a piece of Art work in light blue and tan or a grouping of 2 ot 3 pictures flowers or abstract art. The tan twill love seat sounds lovely with a throw over one end. Please show the end result...

HI -- The room looks great , very soothing and clean looking. Do I see some very pale blue in your back pillows?Perhaps you could find some accent pillows in that color or just add some more texture in natural tones .Think about painting a very pale blue on the ceiling . Even though you have wood shutters I think you need some textured or flowey semi sheer drapes in a white or cream . Even some sheer linen drape panels. Your side tables and lamps need to be bigger . You also need some glitter and sparkle and shine .

funny. i haven't figure out how to answer each comment. This group is wonderful! Thank you for all the input....UPDATE - It turns out that my husband wasn't too crazy about the pale blue :( So, i swapped those pillows out for linen (very pretty) shams with a ruffle. So, now going for a sort of Restoration Hardware "colorless" look. Still, have the dilemma about couch color. He's wanting "cream twill" but worried it will look too French Vanilla??? I suppose if i mix in lots of taupe, creams and whites of different textures?

well...update pictures. One more question??? My father in law made this AMAZING picture of me (on sandpaper) which used to hang over the bed. Now that we've moved the bed to a different wall ( a lower wall) it doesn't fit!!! My husband thinks we should put it anyway. Ridiculous in this spot though, no?? Room is now going to be taupe, cream and white.

Have you considered changing your two carpets to one, one that will fit the room about 6-12 inches from the wall? The two different style carpets are throwing your style out of balance. Find yourself a carpet with pattern and pull out a colour that you love from it. Saying that; please do not match your cover with the wall colour; I think your room will be boring. You need to add another colour in a deeper warmer tone. Add a picture or mirror over the bed. Move the coffee table that’s in front of the plant to another spot or room. Can you change your night tables to larger ones or maybe you have larger night tables in another room that you can switch. Can you flip the bed to the opposite side of the room? I find the bed to large for that side of the room; it covers some of the windows. I hope this helps!
Please add pictures of the opposite side of the room.

I really like the artwork (cool!) but don't think it's the right spot for it. I agree about bringing in a warmer color and consolidating to one rug. I bet a peony color would be nice (or a rust) if you want to stay away from blue. Here's a pic of how it can combine with a blue that your husband might like better and another with brown like another poster described. Good luck!

I am incredibly intrigued by the fact that your father in law did this on sandpaper? It looks amazing! I think it can look great in your room but perhaps on another wall that echoes the shape, whereas this space calls for something wider rather than tall. I love what you have done with your bed, looks very inviting now.

Could you angle the pillows a bit more so that you see the outline of the headboard, right now you just see a wee bit on the sides of it. Think of it as a frame for the pillows.

I see another rug, what size is it? Can you move that rug so that the foot of the bed sits on it, this will ground the bed. I think from what I see that the size and colors will be more elegant than the one there now. Perhaps the cream rug then can sit with the sofa you are ordering placed the same way with the front feet on it. I would then add a cream throw with some of the rug from the bed area colors, add a cushion or two again in those colors but a bit deeper. I would then suggest a boudour cushion in a soft hue from the rug placed in the middle of front pillows.

Does your father in law do other art in this interesting way? Post pics:)

You know the color of a burlap sak, I think that would be perfect, in a much softer fabric of course but that color and texture would be nice. You can keep your tone on tone color palette just add different textures.

It seems you like blue even if your husband does not. Have you thought of adding art or photography in your room that will be uplifting. You could add some color through it. Would you like to awaken looking at your favorite vacation spot or some place you dream to go. I love my photography of St. Thomas! Some people love to decorate with coastal themes so lighthouses and ships can be incorporated in art or photography. Do you dream of Paris or Venice - put a collage of pics from those areas. I have a photography shop on Etsy.com, nancyhehmann. Every thing can be made a size you need or the type of media by contacting me.

But, Etsy has so many other decorator items such as pillows which can add color to your space or throws. They also have vinyl stickers for the wall that say inspirational things or Always kiss me goodnight!

    Have fun!

If you love the artwork, then place it over the bed. Go with neutral for the sofa and then have fun with pillows and throws with [seasonal] color and if not color then add layers of texture; fur throw, nubby pillows, crewel work shams, old lace, etc.
Get some pattern in pillows or a pattern in the rug to add texture to the room. The pale blue green of the three pillows behind the white on the bed is a pretty color...move the pillows in front of the larger white ones and then work with this color on the sofa. Stripes or floral would work.
I love your room! I would choose a color you like - but if it were me - I would choose a white love seat and some pillows that I love - either something fun or soothing to go along with whatever theme that would reflect your current sense of style, interest and passion.... I love the beach - so my pillows might be beachy - but you might choose poppies on blue.....

Have you seen the Pottery Barn circle candle holder they have? It's a longer piece but holds 6 votive's...would be so pretty above your bed.
Ah, but your comments are all so wonderful! i wish i knew how to reply to each?

i love the idea of the Pottery Barn Circle candle holder!!!

Nice room! Feng shui it with plants and a shot of soft color in a romantic painting above the bed. Definitely a textured, upholstered bench and perhaps a soft colored, fuzzy throw. Pink and rose tones would be complementary, romantic and flattering.

I think the picture could actually fit above the bed if that is where you want it. Remake the bed with the bedspread under a rolled up douvette. Add some textural pillows in other shades of the biege and white you are using. White and biege are the same colors with tints of yellow or brown or pink. I could see an animal print, a stripe, and shaggy lambs wool, a faux fur throw. Don't limit yourself to the solid pile. You have exactly matched the bedding and the wall paint. This is too bad, because if you had gone one or two shade darker on the wall, you would have had a nicer mix of color than matching gives you.
On another subject, the night stands are too small for the size of the bed. Try to find some chests that are as high as the mattress top and wide enough to fit the space between the bed and the wall. Mix up your lamps. Get something more substantial in both height and width. The bed is eating everything in the room. The white rug is too small, start looking for one nearer room size that will fit beneath the bed. Add an upholstered bench at the foot of the bed, it will hold the spread and pillows not inuse during the night, and provide a good spot for putting on and taking off shoes, or to through your robe as you crawl into bed at night.
Here are some suggestions direct from Pottery Barn, in the first picture you see that the shame has a deeper color than the wall for contrast, in the second picture you can see that they have used a fabric on the douvette that has the texture of a print that is only hinted at, and in the third, some suggestions as to how to make the bed that you can copy for your own bed without even buying more bedding.
Monochromatic schemes can be warm and inviting if you remember Color, Texture, Shine are what make the room.

Lots of great suggestions here, but mine has nothing to do with the color of the slip, it is the fabric. Don't get the PB twill. It never looks neat! Never. Get the one that is more of a canvas as it holds it shape much better.
Good points! i think i'll incorporate almost all those suggestions! The one thing is that i wish i had uploaded picture of the whole other half of the room. The room is big 24x14 and so on the other side is another carpet with a loveseat planned (rattan armoire on diagonal). Waiting to find a cool loveseat on craigslist or give in to PB Comfort in cream maybe....

What about a slubby parchment linen upholstery with a vintage-looking print in black? I've seen a lot of these recently with writing on, postmarks, scenes of Paris, etc.

Love the room ... can you please tell me the name of paint colour on the walls ..Thanks
  • 14 years ago
I think a slipcover the same colour as the walls will be more soothing and will make the room look larger than white or introducing another colour. I agree with you that cream wouldn't work so well. Bring in your favourite colours and some patterns in cushions for a bit of freshness. The cushions would look crisp with white in the pattern, and soothing with beige, but totally white cushions would be too much.

I agree with you that the sandpaper picture is too large and heavy for above the bed. Do you have another bit of wall for it? Try not to have it higher than the windows. Or lean it on a low table against the wall - maybe with some lamps or vases on one/either side? As it has lots of browns, it may look fantastic somewhere else in your house - maybe on a white wall. Take it around with you and try some unexpected spots.

My final observation is that your valance disappears under your big ruffled bedspread, making the bed look a bit top heavy. I think a plain pleated (not ruffled, you already have ruffles and lace on the bed) valance in the same colour as the walls will really tie in the colour scheme and balance the bed better.

The two colours you have are great together with the dark wood - just bring in a little 'pop' in rugs and cushions and you can then mix it up every season! Also do hold out for furniture you love, and do avoid 'decor art' (every show home has floral tryptics and b&w photos of Paris) and generic objects that mean nothing to you as this is your sanctuary and it should have things (like that picture) that warm your heart.

Michele, the paint color is Outerbanks. Almost certain it was Sherman Williams. Had to be SW or Ben Moore as the only two i buy. But, pretty certain SW. Wasn't sure how to respond to your question in particular. How do i answer address a particular post/comment?
You need a pop of color in a picture over the bed. Then decide on additional pillow colors.

i agree and haven't been able to bring myself to return the porcelain blue quilt and shams to PB! But, i had found these awesome taupe shams and quilt at a garage sale for $10 so for now put the money elsewhere....still, maybe some brown and creams of different textures. i think i might need some soft color after all. thank you so much my Houzz friends!

Similar duvets are available at West Elm along with the throw pillows, area rugs, etc.. The prices are very reasonable. The store chain is a sister chain to Pottery Barn.
