Georgia Arbor Day, Friday Feb 16

Although the National Arbor Day is in April, all the states have their own State Arbor Day based on optimal times to plant trees. Georgia Arbor Day is the third Friday in February, the 16th this year.

It's a good time to think about the benefits that trees provide: shade, beauty, erosion control, air and water purification, food and shelter for wildlife just to name a few.

There are many Arbor Day events happening this week. Check with your local community or paper or the posted events on the Georgia Forestry Commission's page linked below (click on Metro Atlanta for the 13 metro counties).

Our elementary school will be teaming up with the Cherokee County Master Gardeners to give Quercus georgiana seedlings to all the students. The kids love this event and many of them proudly talk about how high their trees from previous years have grown.

Well, we had our Arbor Day Event at school on Tuesday the 13th so that by the time the REAL Arbor Day came around I almost forgot it. By the way, those seedlings that we got from the Georgia Forestry Commission were HUGE. They must have been 3-4 years old and most of them were 2-3 feet tall. The bus driver supervisor contacted the school to complain the next day because they were SO big that he felt they impaired the drivers' ability to see. Oops.

Orders for trees can placed starting July 1, 2007 for delivery December 1 through February (delivered no charge to your county office). See the link below, this is such a good deal.

We had a few extra Quercus Georgiana seedlings, so I did spend some time potting those up for future use. And I ordered 50 pine seedlings for my own yard, so I spent some time yesterday clearing out an area overgrown with smilax and then planting them.

My neighbor has cut down just about every tree on his side of the property line so I wanted to add a few trees back on MY side for a buffer. He hopes to put a pool there one day, I want to make sure that I don't have to look at it!

The upcoming warm trend (check your 10 day forecast) looks like a welcome change! Up to 68 by Thursday and then again on Saturday. I'm ready!

I currently don't have a location on my property for another large tree, but after looking at the photos and description of the Georgia Oak (a/k/a Stone Mountain Oak), I think I will remove a deformed maple to make room for one. It will be 4' from my property line and may have to compete for airspace with a row of Leyland Cypress planted only 18" from my property, on the other side of a fence. I have heard that Leylands are subject to sudden death from several diseases. (Heh Heh!)

It is an attractive small tree and I'm sure that spot is plenty big for it. Those leylands are funny ... I've seen one up and die right in the middle of a row!
