When I moved into my home we had a few large half dead Junipers in front also. A cable and the Jeep made short work of them. They came right out like pulling big weeds!
HD sells a 100 foot cable for about $16-$20.

Uh oh... Vroomp, are you saying ordinary manpower isn't enough to dig out junipers? We also have some in our yard... about 6 years old, low growing/knee high variety... and we want to pull them out. My husband was planning to do it himself... is that unrealistic? They're up by the house so I don't think we can use the car to do it.

A chain with one end around the juniper and the other end around the trailer hitch of a big car is so quick and easy and permanent. I did it last summer, and the shrubs were right up against my front porch. No damage to the house or the porch. I am so glad I did it and those ugly things are gone. Put the car in drive, and it's done. And it's fun in a gentlemen-start-your-engines sort of way. I had been dreaming about getting rid of those shrubs for years and years. It was so much fun to see them go in 20 minutes. So far it's been my favorite part of gardening.

Two years ago I did a big bunch by hand. It was cut off as much as I could with loppers, put it into what became a huge pile, and then go back with a mattock and shovel by hand. It was really tough work. They have not come back and I now have my main rose garden where those things were. Before anyone ever plants a Juniper they should have to go through the process of getting the darn things out first.
