You have to take into consideration the various other surface applications associated with the entire room. You might want to consider a "solid surface" in black as apposed to using a tile because of the grout lines associated with using tile. It will make for a better and cleaner contrast between the vessel bowl and the counter top. The grout lines can clash with the beauty of the vessel and actually take away from the vessel, which you typically want to be the focal point, at least on the counter. Moreover the solid surface makes for a an easier counter top regarding cleanliness. Keep in mind that the counter top being "solid surface" will have a much cleaner looking transition with the vessel sitting on the counter-top, especially if it is recessed a little into the counter-top, which makes for a better look.
