Provided the soil they will be planted in, they should do just fine, and do not need to have the roots spread out. Actually doing this. may damage some of the smaller ones, and cause transplant shock. Be sure to add plenty of soil looseners and a transplant fertilizer once they are transplanted. Green Light brand offers a transplant fertilizer, that also encourages more rooting, as well as having vitamins. I use it here when transplanting any trees, shrubs, or any other larger root systems. Rosemary, once extablished, isnt very fussy about the soil requirements.

I transplanted 28 green rosemary from pots to sandy soil a week ago and now they have a brown woody look to parts of the inside. Are they dying and if so can I save them? I watered them when I first put them in and a week later it poured rain. Please help. Thanks in advance.

Were the plants hardened off prior to planting? That is often a mistake people make. Plants that have been indoors - including greenhouses, need to be hardened off to outdoors conditions gradually. Sun, wind, and rain are all hard on plants not accustomed to them.

They were purchased at home depot and they do keep the plants outside. They were outside for a few days after purchased, then I put them in the garage for the last frost we had here in SC. Planted them once the ground warmed up some or so I thought. Is there a chance for them?
