We have wallpaper on a similar (same size) wall in our bedroom and it still looks bare to me. Seems it needs something more.

Nine feet is not much over standard these days. You don't need to "fill" the wall with art, but to focus attention to the art and away from so much wall. Best way to do that is to find a piece of art that draws people's eye, interests them, starts conversation and enhances the rest of the room. If you have a university art department nearby, that's a great place to find large, interesting and colorful pieces. Many will be for sale and even professors may sell their work. You may even be able to commission a piece just for your space. Good luck!

Great paint color, a very effective backdrop for your light desk frames, laptops and papers. With the relative "busyness" of your deskscapes, I think your idea of 4 pieces of hanging art is great, it would really add a sense of order. 8 would also work and create a grid pattern. Basically, taking the shape of your desk and breaking it down. The vast majority of lines in your space are very straight and I suggest you replace the lamp with one which has strong, straight vertical lines. I would align the top of the art with the soffit bottom. Also, I would keep the art very simple and geometrical in black and white with frames to match your desks OR geometrical with bright colors. I agree with INSIDEOUT, but would stick with 4 large vertical (long and narrow) pieces of art, going to the bottom of the adjacent soffit. I would align the 4 vertical pieces with 2 above each desk, ideally, but more importantly they should be evenly spaced across the wall. Good luck!

I like the order of four and would consider arranging them like this. Ideally the content should relate and should also be compatible with your personal aesthetic.

one thing i have learned over the years and several homes is not to hang something just for the sake of filling up the space. So, I have to say, take you time and find something that is meaningful to you and focus more on THAT than on the size of the piece or the number of pieces you hang. HAVING SAID THAT....when you do think you have found something that is special enough to hang on your walls, I like to cluster them. So instead of worrying about filling up the whole wall, consider a piece for over the one desk....Far right....something vertical. Then choose something that may complement the other piece, but doesn't have to be a 'partner', to hang behind the other desk, another vertical. I really like the illustration that Manon Floreat shared above, with two smaller pieces inbetween. These could be something other than a painting or poster, they could be sculpture, etc.

Hi, in my home work space I like to have items that inspire me or if under pressure relax me! May I ask if both of you work in the same field? what kind of work do you do? It always helps to have a little background info!
But to answer your question - Generally artwork should be hung with the centre of the image at eye level. When the whole wall is the backdrop to the art, as in this case, it is usual to cluster the pieces in the centre with each piece approx. 1/3 of the picture width apart from the next piece. Of course, it depends entirely on the pieces chosen! If dealing with several pieces of differing sizes it is best to lay them out on the floor and create the most pleasing pattern.
Take care with the selection of artwork as 1 of the desks will be very close to the piece!

I agree with the comment about not buying art for the sake of filling up space. I have collected art for over 20 years now, and have more pieces than wallspace. I have always bought art that appeals to me and that I will be able to look at and enjoy for years to come. While I do think of theme when I hang pictures (e.g. subject, colors, etc.) my art is all different sizes and hung in a variety of formats - single paintings, clusters, etc., plus at different heights. I go for the effect that I want and will enjoy. Despite all my artwork, there is a spot in my livingroom that needs a painting. I have waited 3 years to find one that I love and will fit well into that spot.

Why not have something useful? How about two large message,note,chalk boards, that will take some of the clutter off the desks that we all have. Put a long shelf above the boards to hold books and assessories. Lean a couple of pictures on the shelf. The wall would be filled and look great in an office. I think your wall is calling out for a museum display. By this, I mean collect a series of art that you like and hang it such that each picture is centered 60" off the floor. Run this "line" of art across the wall. Black and white photos of your family can be printed in large format at kinko's and placed in a collection of unique, vintage or whatever style of frame that you like. This would be a personal display of your family, friends, special events in your life.

How about wall decals? Change on a whim!

I agree with Manon Floreat's idea. May I ask what brand and colour of paint you have used for your accent wall?

We would advise going with two square art pieces. Nothing smaller than 30"x30 but preferably 40"x40".

May be too late to comment but I strongly recommend one large horizontal piece of art. It will look clean--multiple pieces will only add to the cluttered look. I would go as high as the cutout area on the right side and go the whole distance, minus about 12-18 inches on each side horizontally. I like Manon's idea of doing a set of artwork...Use white frames to match the desk and to pop off the walls. Black & white photography would be nice if you want to keep it monochromatic or add some color...a blue would be nice.
