layering lavender

The oldest lavender plants in my garden are quite large, overgrown specimens of Lavandula x Intermedia 'Grosso' also 'Fred Boutin'. They are getting in the way, but I hesitate to try to move or divide them for fear of killing them! Cuttings seem like the way to go, but can't I go further and layer them to achieve more bang for my buck? I'm sure if I knew the correct way (and when) to do this, I could grow pretty big chunks of these beauties in half the time that cuttings would take. Can someone advise me how to do this? A detailed, step-by-step would help! Many thanks!!
