Basil drying/blackening/getting holes/yellowing

Hi all,

First time gardener here, asking for some help on a basil plant I just bought!

-Setting: San Francisco, CA. Temperatures from 50 to 70, with significant fog over night. Plant is in the default plastic case from the store.
-After a few days outside I noticed some leaves were turning black on the tips, and holes began to appear. I began taking it inside overnight, and the blackness seems to have stopped spreading.
-However, some leaves have browned/dried on the tips, and some of the lower leaves are yellowing.

Some questions:
-How much do I water? The instructions said once a week, but the soil looked dry. Then I watered, and that's when the yellowing started.

When I went to a plant store, they said to check moisture by sticking my finger in, but it feels "airy", like the soil isn't very dense.

-Fertilizer. Needed?

-Pot. Person at plant store said I could keep in default pot but now I'm concerned that all the water is not draining.

-Sunlight: do basil plants like lots of sunlight or shade? I've read articles that say both =\.

Thanks!
