I've always thought that what Americans call Pineapple Mint is really variegated apple mint. Certainly, the variegated apple mint smells and tastes very much like a cross between an apple and a pineapple (more apple than pineapple!) - at least in my part of the world.

Did you crush the leaves before smelling/tasting?

Keep in mind that there are at least 600 different types of mint, so there is great opportunity for false labelling! When buying mints, be guided by your nose and your taste-buds.

hi daisyduckworth

Thanks for that i feel a bit more cleared up as to what i should be smelling for. Yes, i did crush the leaves before smelling, but couldn't get much of a scent at all.

ta, bunks

The plant at the nursery might be what you want; herbs often lose their scent while being marketed due to less-than-ideal conditions at the nurseries. Personally I smell them anyway just to make sure I'm not getting a poor clone.

DaisyDuck is right; it's just variegated Mentha suaveolens. I have it, that has mostly lost its variegation that I was never interested in anyway. Now that it has lost most of its variegation, it seems to be my most aggressive mint (and needs to be thinned out).
