Chives are not supposed to get tall and become droopy.
Cut them back at groung level. They will grow more vigorously. I have grown three different chives (flat garlic, flat onion, tubular onion) and I always cut them back( = harvest) when aroun 8 - 12 inches tall. That is how they are sold at Asian markets.

They should not becomes drooby anyway, if they get enough sun and not too much shade/water.

Young seedlings can become droopy. That is ok. Just leave them as they are. Again, with enough sun, righ temperature and right amount of water, they will be able to stand up on their own.

Strange, isn't it, that plants can grow differently for different people? I've always found chives to be a very flopsy, droopy plant, with only the newest, youngest growth standing upright.

Garlic chives, on the other hand, stands up just fine.

Frankly, I don't see how it's possible to stake your chives, and I don't see any reason to do it. I really don't think you have a problem.

Thanks, both. It's probably just my sense of aesthetics bothering me... I've staked them up for now, but will probably cut them back shortly. They're not quite grown enough for me to snip them yet (6 to 8 inches tall).

It would be kind of cool to lay a grid of fencing material over them to hold them up. But not very practical, I think. Some horizontal string might help them, or dividing them into smaller clumps cut to the ground when they reach a foot tall or so.

I see you live in Canada. Are these chives outdoors? If so they are probably just retiring for the winter. Mine are pretty much finished for this year. If they are indoors they may be too warm and with insufficient light. Either way I would cut them down and eat them. 6 - 8 inches is plenty tall enough if what you have is Allium schoenoprasum, true chives. Some of these never get much taller than that. (And before people start saying theirs are 2 feet tall, I appreciate there are different varieties.)

Thanks for all the input. I will start cutting the chives back shortly. The chives are being grown indoors in a hydro set-up that includes grow lights, and they aren't very old (just over 6 weeks) so I don't think it's a seasonal / light problem. Too warm may be an issue - I'll try shifting them to a slightly cooler area. Meanwhile, although I'm not sure the reason for it, the chives have started to "perk up" and are growing better now that I have "staked" them. What I used was some wire twisted into a U at the top with the remaining wire creating the vertical post so that the U is about 2" up the plant. I think it may be working because it keeps the stalks in a better position to get the light. Or maybe I'm just lucky...

Mine are droopy too except for the flower-heads, I've been considering relocating them to the edge of a retaining wall where flopping over is actually desirable.
