Help! Nameless Mint

I recently bought two mint plants at my local "home depot" One spearmint and one that was not labeled. I am going crazy trying to identify the second one. It is a little over a foot tall, with larger leaves, bigger then a quarter. The leaves are fuzzy on top and the smell seems to be more pungent then the spearmint. If anyone could help me I would be Sincerely grateful. I'm going nuts, thanks

Wow... there are so many hybrids.... and without a pic or a smell, it might be hard to tell.

Maybe call HD and ask them what mints they have. Then maybe we could give yes/no answers. There are a LOT of different mints.

Here is a site that has lots of mints and pictures-go to herbs, then mints & pennyroyals-I can't do a direct link for some reason:

    Papa Genos

Also, realize that mints are mislabeled a lot (or maybe different hybrids), I'm unsure about the identity of my chocolate mint, though I still have the label it isn't very chocolatey and doesn't look like the one on papa genos and I've had better chocolate mints before.

Home Depot Didn't know what kind of mint it was. The label that was in it just said "Aromatic Herbs." I asked the HD people and they couldn't help me. I was really wanting peppermint because of it's strong aroma. All they had was spearmint and this other plant. I thought I could identify it but it's proving to be more difficult than i had thought it would be. The aroma on this mint is quite strong. I would almost say it's stronger then the spearmint. It's leaves However are quite large. Much larger than the spearmints which may account for it's strength in odor

It might be apple mint. It makes good tea as part of a mint blend.

I don't really think it's apple or any of the other fruity varieties because it just smells like mint. There's no undertone of citrus, chocolate or anything else. Just mint :)

Well, you might have to just be satisfied that it's mint. My mints cross and don't breed true from seed... I have so many Mutt mints.... I don't worry too much about it.

Hmm... Are these fuzzy leaves saw-toothed? From what you describe, my first guess would be catmint.

Best way to test that, of course, would be to see if your cat (or a friend's cat) goes wacka-wacka over it.

Second guess would be that it's the same kind of mint I have growing all around my borders. Sadly, I haven't been able to identify it since I moved in 6 years ago... I simply call it, "That *&$^#@! invasive mint."

I have apple mint and it smells minty to me, not appley. I'm sure it's the right variety. It's fuzzy-leaved so that's my guess.

    Does it look like this?

    > I have apple mint and it smells minty to me...

In the UK, yoy may have "Bowles Apple Mint" which has a spearmint flavor. In the USA, Apple Mint (and Pineapple Mint) usually has some of the flavor and scent of green apples, although I once got an "apple mint" with a spearmint flavor.

Gerard, the 16th Century herbalist, said that there were more mints than there were stars in the sky.
Most nurseries grow their mints from seed. From seed you can get almost anything.
I choose my mints by smell and taste. If they smell good I keep them if not I thow them out.
Some herb nurseries grow good smelling cultivars from cuttings.
Do you have a specialist herb nursey locally that could help with idetification?

Funny, I googled up this site hoping to find out the same thing. I was given a mint over the weekend that is fuzzy on top, light green long leaves with no saw- tooth edges and has a really strong wild mint aroma.

I also have a fuzzy mint. I have been afraid to eat it because I'm not sure if it is edible. Are all mints edible?
