Stevia dying.

I tried to overwinter my stevia plants indoors in a west window. I thought it was a tropical/subtropical plant, is this more of a temperate or extreme dry/wet climate plant? It was fine as long as I did not water it, but I just couldn't withhold when they started to wilt. Then, bam, dead (at least above the soil, as far as I can tell). Couldn't be root rot, it happened within a few hours to a day of minimal watering to a plant that was just fine previously. All 4 went this way. Do they need dormancy and that last tiny sprinkle to keep them from wilting to death trigger it?

Also, I tried saving them by taking cuttings. I took 50 cuttings. I have 2 left, and I'm not sure they'll make it. They're in a west window over a (low) heater). A bit of rootone, even moisture, all but 2 rotted within a week. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Ellie
