As recently answered before, Basil will not do well indoors in pots. It loves plenty of sunshine and when it pots dosn't have much aroma or taste. You can easily start from seeds, but keep in mind that to get it to grow well, it does need warmth and plenty of direct sun. If you have a greenhouse, that can help, provided its also heated.

Basil doesn't need warmth, it needs HEAT. Basil in nature is dead in winter, even in mild climates. You can cheat nature a little by putting the plants in a hothouse, but they must get lots and lots of sunlight.

An alternative is to sprout the basil and use it in its immature state rather than keeping plants going. I particularly like using 'Dani' variety to get a little lemon kick.
