Yes. Though they're called "jelly jars" they can be used for any pickle, relish or other sort of canning. They are suitable for all canning, even pressure. It's more a style designation than anything else.

Thanks so much Carol.

Unless they are the plastic freezer jars! I find that 8 ounce jars take up too much space in storage, and prefer pints and quarts for most everything. Pickles of any kind are nice in pints and quarts. Can you imagine making dill pickles in 8 ounce jars? Gee, thats just one cuke, or may be two if you jam them in! There is also two kinds of 8 ounce jelly jars, the plain ones and the 'quilted crystal' type with an embossed pattern on them.

I put lots of things in those "jelly jars", from pickled jalapenos to chutney, onion relish and all kinds of jam, jelly and fruit butters. Oh, and catsup, maraschino cherries and brandied sweet cherries, anything I'm just going to use a little of.

Quarts are only for beans, tomatoes and sauerkraut, pints for everything else except the above.

I don't care for pickles and don't eat hot peppers by themselves whether pickled or not. Elery doesn't eat many sweets and that includes jam/jelly. So, I put my jam in the 8 oz. jars and by the time it's gone I'm tired of that flavor, but it's not around long enough to mold. Catsup is a condiment, I'd have a quart or even a pint around until the next decade.

I find I get too much waste if I can too many things in quarts, they don't get used up.

Annie

Back when I was single and lived alone, I canned a lot in the 8 oz. jars. When I make soup, I sometimes had enough for an 8 oz jar and would add it to the pressure canner if I had room. They are great for a cup of soup.

For many years, I only canned tomatoes, juices, pie fillings and fruits in quart jars. Beans, carrots, soups, etc., were all in pint jars. I'd can a few quarts to give away to my daughters since they were married with children. One year I even canned corn in the 8 oz. jars since I knew a pint would be too much for me. I followed the processing time for pints. I even bought some of the 4 oz. canning jars for jellies and jams.
