Ribbon around tree at construction site: what does it mean?

When an orangy-pink ribbon/plastic tape is tied around a tree at a construction site, does it mean to SAVE the tree or CUT DOWN the tree? Are those trees marked for saving or for cutting? Is there an industry standard where the ribbon always means one or the other?

I've always understood it to mean that tree is to be left standing. I'm often warned by foremen to be careful around ribboned trees while backing my dump truck.

They run over and crush the roots so a lot of them still die

...........and in the City of Orlando...... YELLOW tape is used to mark the tree for removal.......Lots-O-Trees this year !

Around here (Stuart area) I've seen it used both ways. It mostly seems to mean "Whatever you're doing to the rest of what's here, do the opposite with this one."

If it's a large tree, it should have stakes with tape out about 5 feet from the trunk to protect the roots. If it's an oak, they'll probably kill it with the equipment anyway.
