Twilight Zone?

Both of us worked in the garden all day, watering, pulling weeds, fertilizing, looking for problems, calculating heat tolerance for them and for me! We've been parched lately, dry at dust when water hits it bounces a puff and the water back up in the air. The birds and the other critters, looking for a drink and a cool bath. My dogs, hanging back reluctant to spend mid day anywhere outdoors.

So I put the low circular sprinkler on, lofting water up like the sprinklers we kids ran through on hot summer days. Not hard.
I worked it from the garden end containing blueberries and roses, the bluebird nestbox and the compost heap, the peach tree and the table with small potted hosta beneath a patio umbrella. And then the sasanquas playing bridge with two giant open market umbrellas, clustered in family groups with hosta out for a Sunday stroll. Birds flying through the spray like it was a Disney movie, I made it all the way down the Back40, watering this way by about sunset, when I stopped at the banana trees to take a break.

DH was done with his work and putting a hamburger on the grill. I stood there happy as a clam, and then I noticed the light.

It happened to be that magical moment when a glow of golden warmth suffuses the whole locale, and it is breathtaking. I turned toward the Back40, which assumed an other-worldly appearance. I asked DH to please come with me to a spot like no other....he hesitated, the hamburg will get too done, but I really wanted him to share this with me.....and I hijacked him to the Hosta haven.

In this light, the sand dollar shaped stepping stones, three of them, beside the big pine tree stump, turned from splotched cement, to a glowing faint lavender. The light shimmered as we passed through Stargate (I know to locate H. 'Stargate' here) into this alternate reality. This intimate spot, beneath a canopy of high trimmed sasanquas, large market umbrellas, bananas, a higher canopy of chartreuse young pecan leaves on large trees. You're away from all else, peaceful, cloistered, a long row of scented star jasmine, a stucco Teahouse like an Irish cottage, the hosta shining in glorious hues of green, yellow, white, silver, lavender, their leaves lush and glistening, water resting in big drops, not a breath of air stirring.

I am so glad that DH came with me. He looked at his watch, but he was the one who led onward to a turn in the path, and said "what is that one?" and pointed to Avocado......big and intensely colored in this light....."wow".....and we turned again, and under the tan market umbrella he asked again, and I said 'Sagae'.

.....he was engaging in hosta talk. It was a great moment. I told him I enjoyed gardening more now than at any other time in my life. We could do as we pleased and had few distractions.

And then he went back to his hamburg cooking, and I stood there thinking.....about how we created in our backyard a magical sort of Twilight Zone altered reality.....with hosta.

This was my night for a Twilight Zone experience. Awesome.
