I would like to replace my old carpet on our stairway with a decorative carpet runner. I have two landings. How do I treat this area? I am not sure if there is hard wood on this area of the stairway. There is hardwood on the left side of the stairs, this is the same side as the banister and railing. can you offer any suggestions?

    Hmm, that's a tough one. I would recommend painting the landings if there isn't wood under there once you pull up the carpet. You could continue the runner on the landing, or skip the runner there and add a small rug. I can't tell what color wood the stairs are - they look like a painted white.
