The interesting thing about a bird's system is that they need to maintain lightness of weight for flight, so they process what they ingest very quickly, passing frequently. Hummers digest food in a matter of minutes.

Birds have a vent (or cloaca) that passes both urine and feces. So what you are seeing is probably a bit of both, pee and poo.

Good news -- birds are so used to my presence on the deck that I can work on potted plants within a few inches/feet of the hummers feeding on the plants and feeder.

Bad news -- I sometimes get squirted as they "unload" before takeoff... if you let it dry, you'll see white stuff and black stuff, both pee and poo!

Wow, I have never seen that. I'll be sure to watch more closely now when they are at the feeder!

Hi anita55! It happens so fast sometimes it might be easy to miss it. One of my sweetie pies gushes profusely. I just try to stay out of the aim of splatter!
