Early Flowers?

To be honest, I've never paid too much attention to the hosta flowers; some I leave, some I cut when they sprout up, but it just happens when it happens. However, this year it seems like they're coming very early. Here in Michigan, this will be the 5th day of high 80's/low 90's temperatures and they must be as confused as I am thinking it's mid-August instead of mid-June. And, we've had those kind of temps intermittently since March.

I have Jimmy Crack Corn, Great Expectations, Frances Williams (although, I think that is usually one of the first), Blue Umbrellas, Silver Bowl and couple of others throwing up flowers already. So, am I just not remembering, or is this pretty early for flowers?

The only one I remember from year to year is the Lancifola because it's one of the first to come up and one of the last to flower.

I had a couple throwing up scapes before Memorial Day. I think they were confused by the odd weather.
I have blooms on Elegans, thunderbolt, royal standard, September sun and love pat to name a few....and scapes on gold edger, August moon and some undulata to name a few.
Seems early to me too....but they sure look pretty.

Yep, everything is running at LEAST two weeks early, if not a full month.

i agree with ademink, some of mine are six weeks early. Cadillac usually blooms midJuly and is blooming now. I can remember when it blooms because it goes down hill very fast after bloom. I have tons of pods already EXCEPT on my streaked breeders - I have nary a scape.

It's not just hosta, I have daylilies blooming two to four weeks ahead of schedule with low budcount, short scapes and small blooms. I think the plants just want to get the weird year over and done. As do I - next year will be better, maybe.

Me, too, in Northern Indiana! Many starting to bloom, quite early.

I also, have plants blooming early. It has to be because of the weird spring weather, with the late spring freeze. I have some plants putting on extra eyes, while others, like my Sum and Subs, being so stunted, they are a lot smaller than they ever were. Right now,my August Moons are waay bigger that my largest Sum and Sub! Also,I have some plants like Frances Williams, and Black Hils blooming, and they have never bloomed before! Phil

I also have many blooming right now. Mistress Mabel, and Emily Dickinson with planteginia backgrounds?? The strangest is Fall Bouquet which is getting ready to bloom. What do these plants know that we don't?

    no, no, no ....

there are at least 10 species of hosta ... all bloom at different times ... it is one of the defining bits of info to tell if a hosta has such genes in its gene pool ....

sieboldiana [as in Elegans] SHOULD bloom as early as the last 2 weeks of MAY ...

as you know ... plantaginea is improperly known as the August lily .. because... ta da .. it blooms in august.. no kidding.. lol ...

and there are 2 or 3 that bloom in september and or october ....

so you were incorrect in thinking hosta bloom in august ... they each have their own bloom time based on their genes ..

that said ... they are all screwed up this year due to weird weather .. i dont even recall the sieboldianas blooming in may ... but it was a bizarre may here in MI .. as the others noted elsewhere ...

so much to learn .. so little time ...

During 2014 I found my Emerald Tiara sending up scapes in the middle of October! This year (2015) it came up mid-season when it normally does. My Sum and Substance has NEVER bloomed without the aide of the amber building light. This year it defied that rule and finally scaped without the light; although it was only half as tall with lavender flowers rather than white. Last year my Little Devil scaped and I'm waiting to see it makes a return performance. And finally my Stiletto looks organized enough to scape; but I'm not seeing anything on that - yet.

Since my observations of Emerald Tiara last year I have not put as much stock into adage of 'the genes determine to bloom time'. There must be an environmental condition tied to it as well.
