clay ball cleaning

Hi, I grow vegges in an outdoor NFT system using clay balls in lengths of pvp pipe. I reclaim all the balls after harvesting by drying root clumps in the sun then breaking them up and seperate the balls from the rubbish using a fine wire mesh screen. I them wash them a few times and reuse. Over a few years some of the balls are becoming coated with a white substance which i suppose is a salt build up. Will this buildup become a problem? Washing dosent seem to remove it, does anyone have any ideas on the best way to clean the balls for reuse?
