Yes, you check viability the same way. It may be that you missed the embryo streaks. Do the seeds seem to have a reasonable amount of endosperm? If they do, they're probably fertile even if you can't see the embryo's. If you're still worried, try germinating a couple of seeds using the baggie method.

Thanks, I checked the seeds one by one, and 4 have embryos, the others really don't have much of anything, they are chaff. Out of about 120 seeds, 4 have embryos and maybe 10 or so are maybe promising. Probably won't be ordering from her again. Lol. Bought 25 Asiatic seed from her, and before I got them I ordered 100 more, when I received the 25, literally every single one was chaff, no embryo, no endosperm, absolutely nothing. Then I received this order and had about the same results. But, on the bright side the trumpet seeds look great. :) was really hoping to start some asiatics from seed, guess I'll just wait til next year, and hope my asiatics set pods. Also, I've read about using the baggie method, but I can't remember fully. Do you have a link where it explains in detail what to do?

Disappointing. Don't throw what seems to be chaff away however - there may still be a few embryo's you haven't seen.

I don't have a link to hand for the baggie method, but a search of the Yahoo Lily Group archives should produce what you want. It is easy to do, providing you don't make the medium too wet and remember to chill seeds with delayed germination appropriately. Just remember that germinating seed out of season is easy - growing things on through winter can be inconvenient.

If you want some asiatic seed earlier than next autumn keep an eye on the NALS website. Even non-members can buy seed after the main distribution is over.
