Spring! Peepers!

I'm usually not the first to report Spring Peepers, but we heard them on Friday! The Spring Equinox starts today at 7:21 PM. Here's is Deb doing a Jules Feiffer Dance to Spring!

All right! I've added it to the First spring peeper reports in New England FAQ.

Everyone else please report as you hear them and I'll enter the dates.

    Thanks,

I just LOVE that sound. I wish I could fall asleep to it every night!

Oh Happy Day! I am so happy to read this post! We have not heard them here on Cape Cod, as yet, but it should happen very, very soon. I was in CT two weeks ago and saw that many ponds and wetlands were still covered with ice. I felt so sorry for all those peepers, stuck under all that cold and ice, ready to spring back to life, drumming their little toes in anticipation. So happy to hear that spring has started it long journey north. I look forward to it's arrival.

    Thanks, cloud 9!

Hey, sooey! When do the herring start running in Brewster? Another sign of spring....

I've been away for 11 days and was so afraid Spring would start without me....I really look forward to that first moment I hear the peepers, being a new New Englander, and all! I returned to some serious snowflakes at Logan today. I am actually grateful I didn't miss the onset.

Not sure if they are out around here - it's too darn cold to stay outside for long, lol!

Eagerly awaiting the real onset of spring....

The advance scout is up here in Plymouth, MA! I heard one very determined peeper chirping away this evening. He sounded cold but hopeful. That usually means the full chorus will be singing in the next few days (if it doesn't get cold again....)

I just heard one tonight out here in Northampton!

And, I've been hearing people saying we're about to get 6-12 inches of the four-letter S word. So, I don't know if Spring is here or not.

Well, it's snowing and no one is singing. I guess the little frogs peered out at the weather, hit the snooze alarm, and went back to sleep.

First peepers heard last night in South Weymouth and again this afternoon. Not many but enough to recognize their call. And while typing this on my deck a yellow jacket flew by me, it must be spring, YAY......

I'm glad you heard peepers, rich, but I'm not sure I like the idea of yellow jackets so early.

They've started up again this evening here in Plymouth, MA after being silent since last Wednesday. Still not a full chorus, but a couple of peepers. It took a day of temperatures close to 60 degrees to wake them up. It must be cold down there by the pond in the woods.

Quack, quack! The wood frogs are singing their songs too. Love is in the air!

It's been a pretty cold early Spring here, so the peepers seem to be a few days later than usual. Are you finding this to be true Claire? Anyway, I was out for a walk in Concord early last evening and heard the first lone peeper in some wetlands!

terrene: This year seems to be a lot slower than last year, except that cloud_9's report is about the same for CT. There's a lot of variation if you look at the reports for previous years (I've been compiling records since 2004).

First spring peeper reports in New England:

This is not rigorous science - reports are from different locations by different people and there's always uncertainty about whether it's really the first peeping or just the first time it was noticed (I include myself in that category). I always ask myself whether I trotted across the street every night, too early, too late, in time to hear the beginning. Or did I somehow miss it. Later on when the full chorus sings I can hear it from by the house.

Yay! Finally! I was beginning to feel left out, lol. I didn't think I'd ever hear them, but tonight on the way home from work there they were!

I heard my first few peepers yesterday (Sunday 4/10) and tonight both the peepers and the wood frogs are singing their little hearts out. I am just north of Concord, NH.

Both entered, thanks! I've had peepers for a while but I haven't heard wood frogs. To be fair, the peepers are across the street while I have to hike to hear the wood frogs and I haven't been that way for a few days.

Just realized the peepers were out tonight. Could've been out last night, but aren't sure.

ooopps! forgot to say we're up here in Hillsboro, NH. ;)

    Got it, entered.

    Thanks,

nhbabs' peepers beat ours or maybe we weren't listening. We lived just north of Concord, too. Heard them Monday night 4/11/11

Finally!!!! I saw on last year's thread that I reported hearing the peepers sing April 1 or 2. This relentlessly cold spring it was April 26 here in Danby, Vermont, three and 1/2 weeks later than last year! And I *have* been faithfully listening for them nearly every night now. I really thought they had all perished or decided to stay under the mud all summer, but fortunately they live!

Heard peepers for the first time here in central VT last evening on 4/26 and wood frogs on 4/22.

The peepers are still going full tilt in central VT. How about in southern NE are they still peeping?

They were still out until a couple of days ago down here in CT - it's been wonderful! Now the wood frogs have taken over...

I don't remember the peepers lasting so long... but then again I never paid close attention and thought the wet weather may be the reason they're still at it. The woods frogs quit croaking several weeks ago and the pond is full of 'wogs...potential slug eaters.
