Need Kitchen Help!

Baltic brown granite, not sure what color cabinets. Thinking about wood laminate flooring, what color? What color to paint walls? Note: kitchen opens to family room; will install same flooring in kitchen and family room; can't afford new cabinets or granite now.

This kitchen would benefit from a lighter shade of the current wall color. Usually when there are 2 kinds of wood used in a kitchen, the color on the floor tend to be darker to visually ground the room.

Thank you both for your help. We were thinking of using spiced walnut for our flooring. Any particular shades/colors recommended for the walls of the kitchen and connected family room. If we wanted to do an accent wall in the family room, any suggested color? Thanks.

Personally, I would go the other way than Dytecture. I feel that your kitchen needs lightening up. I would go with a light floor; you could consider the ceramic/porcelain wood-look tiles: http://www.builddirect.com/Porcelain-Tile/Woodstone-Cedar/ProductDisplay_6933_p1_10075886.aspx

Because of your stainless appliances, I would paint the walls a silvery-blue: Behr Ozone UL220-7 with a white ceiling, perhaps the silver blue in the tray section.

I know you didn't ask about it but I think you need a more colorful backsplash if you even have one,I can't really tell. I have a kitchen similar to yours and it made a huge difference. And a more colorful window treatment. Maybe that would make your color choice easier. Also, hardware would make it look a little more "custom".

I like your flooring - it has a pleasant rustic and old world feeling to it. Is there a specific reason you want to replace it with wood. Wood flooring is an iffy thing in kitchens that are actually used, particularly if there are children in the house.

What I see in the photo is a cabinet color that just doesn't quite go well with the counter top and floor, there's an orange hue. I'd suggest a glaze or stain on the cabinets to enhance the old world look that already exists with the floor and counter top. Your cabinets would also benefit greatly with the addition of hardware, I'd be inclined toward a black wrought iron type for the old world vibe.

The room does need some color accents and a window treatment (something more than just the blinds).

Consider painting the backside of the peninsula (where the legs go when seated at the counter) and the side of the refrigerator cabinet panel that faces the family room; those large plain expanses of paneling are not a decor asset.

And finally - lighting. The room needs some hanging lights at the peninsula and probably over the sink as well. And whatever is going on with that dark recessed area on the ceiling... you can't tell enough from the photo, but I suspect that needs to be looked at further.

You can leave the cabinets as they are ( nice wood tone) or paint them white. I think they would look ince in white. If you paint them white, add some round brushed nickel knobs to add some sparkle to the cabinets. For the floors I'd choose a wood about the color of your cabinets. How about a pear green on the walls to brighten your kitchen. As for the family room , a nice tan color would look nice also. Will you use any tile on the backsplash?

Bobbi-I was thinking same as you--LIGHT floor. How about a pickled oak laminate for flooring? If it's something you might like, then I think you should consider painting the cabinets light (off-white). Install a backsplash (glass/stone) that has ash, brown, and espresso hues... If you keep your current cabinet color you could install slate tile for a backsplash... Add lighting under upper cabs...
    A few pics for inspiration...CheerS!

I agree with needing lighting over the peninsula, unless your current lighting extends over it. I actually love that recessed lighting and whatever colors you decide to put in your kitchen, maybe you could paint that lighting area to match. I also have moulding on the backside of my peninsula, the styles goes with the cabinets but doesn't look exactly like them.I forgot what it's called.

Definitely paint the cabinets and consider a different color on top than on the bottom, similar to what we did with this kitchen here.

Property Sisters, I love that light on the top, dark on the bottom look! I wish I had done that when I painted my cabinets but there's no way I'm going to do that again.

Antoinette, I completely agree with you, laminate is way too delicate. I'll never do that again either.

Hi ochills, I agree with Crystal, you need a more interesting backsplash! If you send one of our designers a closer/clearer image of your countertops we will gladly send you some options for coordinating backsplashes (we are experts at this!), and maybe that will even help you choose a paint color!

I totally agree about the laminate---however, I'm just going off of what the homeowner wrote, which was Laminate. If budget is not an issue, then I suggest hardwood throughout or stone (if they like a feeling of cold). Same applies with the laminate-it gives a sense of warmth---but as an alternative the porcelain tile with woodgrain could work-it will look warm, but feel cool to the touch. I'm thinking what appeals to the senses---And---the budget. CheerS!

I didn't notice before that you gave the name of your granite. Here are some options of backsplashes that would match your counters, and then you could pull a tone from that to paint your walls. We also have mosaic blends that are close to the color of your cabinets, but if you ended up painting your cabinets then a backsplash in that color scheme would be a lovely complement.

I would NOT put light floors in a kitchen, unless you want to constantly clean them. Kitchen floors get dirty and light floors will show everything! I second the idea to paint your cabinets (I suggest white or off white) - or at the very least, add some nice hardware (oil-rubbed bronze). Your kitchen layout is exactly like mine - take a look at a photo of my kitchen after we installed new granite, painted the wood cabinets white, and installed a porcelain tile floor. I get compliments on the floor all the time and no matter how dirty they get, you can't tell! They are also completely smooth, not textured, so very easy to clean. The tile is Marazzi Jade Sage.

i agree with previous posters about wood vs tile in the kitchen. Is there a reason you need to change tile? Could you just put wood in family room? I would hesitate to tell you to paint your cabinets white without knowing what "look" your FR has and how much the two rooms open up to each other.
Rust-oluem has an incredible product out which can change the finish of your cabinets with no stripping, sanding or priming. Work with the colors in the granite and floor and defintely add knobs as someone previously mentioned. If its too dark, add light through lighting, accessories and wall color.

I would keep the beautiful tile floor-have cabinets painted expresso and do a nice backsplash.

Here are two pics of the family room which opens up to the kitchen. Again any suggestions with paint and flooring are greatly appreciated. We are leaning towards laminate in both areas (budget) and we can not afford to change the granite kitchen tops right now.

Please note that the pics are from the area with the previous owners furniture.

Hi---I think the kitchen you should use for inspiration is the first one I sent you. Whatever flooring you decide to go with, select a light to medium value, nothing too dark. Hope this is helpful---and YES, I advise you to paint your cabinets. CheerS![houzz=
