My Google browser isn't letting me copy and paste urls for some reason, but googling "how prevent tree damage sapsucker" will reveal many sites discussing the issue. As with most bird pests, they can be discouraged from visiting a particular location with a physical barrier (burlap, hardware cloth) and can be scared away (mylar "scare" tape, owl decoys).

My sympathies for the destruction to your beautiful trees. Are you sure they were healthy prior to any Hitchcockian attacks? Sapsuckers will often target a stressed tree as it is easier to get the sap rising (per my research, albeit brief).

For those that can see the URLs, the Deodara to the right of the Weeping Giant Sequoia is the Deodara pictured in the first picture. It was very healthy. It's looking real thin now, with about half the needles missing. The damage extends over thirty feet high so a cage is not practical. I'm going to have to remove the tree and hope they don't go after the remaining Deodaras.
