Piece of cake! It's a mere baby among firs at that size. Even the roots on a 100 ft tall, 2 ft diameter fir are amazingly puny for a tree that size.

I think you'll find it's an easy task to move it, or get rid of it.

That shouldn't take but an hour or two. Just this time last year I removed two 20+ foot 12" trunk pine trees from the corners of the yard with a hand saw, skill saw, shovel, and axe. On a trees of that size, my root excavation pit was only about 6 feet across and two feet deep at the center, your chore will be much smaller. Most roots will angle downward and become deep rapidly, not worth going after.

Your digging may only be 3-4 feet across and a foot deep. Use a heavy-duty shovel for the roots; file the edge a bit if it has become very blunt from use; an axe swung that low is unsafe unless you are used to using one for root removal.

We removed one larger than that by hooking a chain around the trunk and yanking it out with the truck. My DH loves this method of gardening. LOL. When the ground is as soft as it is now, they come right out. Not good if you have plants you want to keep right up around it though.

DH removed a crabapple today that was ten feet tall but had never thrived in the ten years since we planted it. Took less than an hour. The neighbor guys love the truck method too.

Guys, the root system of a fir-tree is COMPLETELY different to that of a pine tree ! Roots of a fir-tree stretch out wider however they are on the surface as compared to the pine tree root system which is built around a stem root which goes really deep. One can find this info elsewhere.
