Oriental pear trees have white blooms and grow upright like a Bradford Pear. If you don't pick off all the fruit the branches break.

Actually Asian orchard pears (Pyrus pyrifolia forms) tend to produce spreading growth, as do the two crabapple cultivars suggested. To get similar size and shape to erect-growing Callery pear cultivars in another rose family tree try Malus tschonoskii. Not as conspicuous in flower but more interesting both in leaf and in general. And unlike the pear trees, it does not reek when in bloom.

If you would rather again have a cloud-like floral display look for one of the more erect-growing Amelanchier cultivars.

I finally got my tree. After three trips to the nursery, I just picked out the most beautiful tree they had. It is the right size and shape. It is a flowering plum, Thundercloud. It is a nice tall tree with a thicker trunk. It should look good from the beginning. I had one years ago and it was a beautiful tree.
