They are everywhere down here in Portland, even Home Depot. I would think any local nursery would have them.

This local independent retailer had some pretty nice ones at the big Seattle garden show in February as well as later, at the recent plant sale at the Center for Urban Horticulture.

Try the Garden Spot, Kent's or Bakerview Nursery. All carry a good selection of hellebores although it is getting a bit late in the season for the best of the xhybridus in flower. Haggen's was also carrying at least 5 different types when I was up there a couple of weeks ago, including some hefty 2 gallon xhybridus from Briggs. 'Ivory Prince' and 'Silver Moon' are looking stunning right now and have a much longer bloom season than the xhybridus do, although offer a limited flower color.

Even Walmart has Hellebores these days. My thought is that now the supply exceeds demand. I'm having a problem with a box full of hellebores that I got sitting by my back door. I got black ones, speckled ones, and a double rose one I found mixed in with the singles at a nursery. I'm not sure where they should be planted. The flowers dangle and I have to turn them up to really appreciate them.

Pick some and float them in bowls of water in the house.

Should the spent flowers be pruned down to the base of the plant?

If you don't cut off the spent flowers you will/may end up with all the Hellebores you ever wanted. I will be weeding out seedlings forever!!!! On the other hand, you might come up with some seedlings producing interesting colors.

GREAT! So I should just let the flowers dry up and drop? This would be fabulous since I've been bowled over by the prices I've seen.

The presence of seedlings is dependent on the type of hellebores you are growing. x hybridus seeds (and crosses) freely if you allow the flowers to remain and seedheads develop and with some patience, is a great way to get new plants. But many of the other hybrids are sterile and buying additional ones or dividing (if brave enough) existing ones is the only way to increase your collection of these.
