I can relate. I lost a 'Patty's Purple', a couple of 'Red Edge', and half a dozen 'Tricolor'. The two formers I shall miss, the latter not so much.

BTW, was your ears burning last month ? I was thinking about you whilst driving along that lonesome highway that leads to Roosevelt Dam. Sure was green down there this trip. I'm thinking the desert is going to be blooming quite nicely right about now. Fountain Hills was awesome, we even caught the "Great Fair" on the Avenue of the Fountains. We ordered a custom piece for our sunroom. It's laser cut steel in a 3' circle with a desert landscape. It's then painted with several tints of copper and clear coated. I'll take a picture and post it once we receive it.

My 'Red Edge' and 'Tricolor' show no damage at all.

I bought the 'Eddington' at Cystus Nursery and was told it was hardy.

LOL, nope ears not burning. Yes, the desert is blooming quite nicely right now, I've had friends send me photos. Roosevelt Lake sure is gorgeous, haven't been there for years though. Sounds like a really nice art piece.

If you scroll through the pages I linked to above note the discussion of what, including root rot has produced some failures in the trial at the Extension Center.

Cistus (Cistus is the rock roses and Cytisus is a genus of brooms) nursery is the Home of Zonal Denial. Go by the minimum temperatures they indicate for each item when assessing suitability for your location.

yes, I realized I spelled Cistus wrong after I posted it...

The Hebes I'm left with seem to be very hardy, but none are spectacular bloomers. Does anyone have one that blooms purple and is hardy?

I see the Hebe speciosa hedge at the Center for Urban Horticulture, Seattle has apparently frozen down (again); today I noticed it had all been cut down to stubs.

Anyone living within reasonable driving distance of the OSU trial (link, above) should go look at that to see which ones are holding up (and may have blue or purple flowers). Not exactly a banana belt location, any that are able to persist there should be pretty tough.

Not sure of the type of Hebe I have but it looks like the top froze this winter... Lower branches have leaves and look OK... Can I prune out the dead stuff and when should I do the pruning???

Yes and now is probably fine. Hebes respond well to pruning.

My H. 'Sapphire' lived. I haven't had it very long, just since last fall so I don't know how long it blooms but it is purple.

I incorrectly said I had 'Tricolor', I don't. I have 'Silver Dollar'

Not exactly a banana belt location is right. That OSU plot is near the Willamette River and it gets fierce winds. I worked near there for nine years.

Is there a small leafed purple flowering that sprawls named Edward G........? I lost the tag, it and a small leafed, white flowered globe shape (no name was with it when it was given to me) came through the winter fine. It went down to -4F here a couple of nights this winter.

Thanks for the link, boy was I off base, as soon as I saw the name Carl Teschner it registered, the cold temps don't seem to bother this one. Now to see if I can find a name for the other one I have :o).
