A friend grows his vegetables in clear plastic tunnels.

I'm going with clear plastic hoop covers this fall and winter, but was thinking of getting a cheap blanket or two to throw over them on real cold nights. Is that what you mean? I'd think light is pretty important, especially in our dark winters. Maybe someone's got experinence with fleece blankets.

I've added a link to the product that I am considering. I've never heard this mentioned before in this forum. I think its fleece, instead of plastic. Its quite unusual. But its on sale, so I figured I would try to find out more about it.

If people think this won't work, do you have any other recommendations? :)

Fleece is warm to us because the air pockets in the fleece are warmed by our body heat, and add extra insulation, to keep in the heat we're giving off. Fleece feels good next to our heat-releasing skin.

Plants don't give off their own heat, so I have to wonder if fleece would really be as cozy to plants as it is to us.

Plastic covers and such, when covering plants, trap the heat given off by the earth. Not quite the same mechanism as in us, so my initial reaction is that the fleece blanket for plants is a marketing gimmick. But then, I've never gardened in eastern Canada either, or anywhere else with truly cold winters.

The PNW climate is very different from the entire rest of the US and Canada, in that our winters are uniformly dark - the sun is low on the horizon, AND the sky is blocked by heavy cloud cover pretty much all winter long. In the rest of the country, there's cloudy spells, and bright sunny spells. Winter protection that's successful in the rest of the country, won't necessarily be so here, because they don't have to worry about letting in every last little photon of light. They've got enough sunlight in winter that they don't need to compromise between letting in light and keeping in heat. We do.

I'd stick with clear plastic here. We don't get all that cold, and we need maximum light transmission.
