Often it is easier to adjust the drainage - raising the soil level (berming) or planting high in a wide but shallow planting hole can accomodate plants that need better drainage in a site that is poorly drained.

Otherwise, trees that will tolerate poor drainage or even standing water for short periods include Nyssa sylvatica, Sweet Bay magnolia, hackberry, Betula nigra (river birch), Amelanchier canadensis (shadblow) and Freeman and red maples.

Bald cypress.

Bald cypress are gorgeous, but they get a bit big for most front yards don't they? Catalpas and metasequoias are also very large trees. I do like catalpa flowers though, and they smell sweet.
