I'm sorry for your loss. I haven't had a GBH but I have had countless raccoons and a kingfisher or two.

DH converted a Fi Shock electric pet fence from plastic and wire to bamboo and copper and it is more attractive and does work on the coons.

you can string fish line or a net to cover the pond for heron control. You can also try a motion detector water cannon. You can buy the Scarecrow or there are DIY versions available.

I agree with bboy, Moorehaven is the best around. Val and Chris (the Moores of Moorehaven;-) have been my watergarden mentors and they have helped me keep my fish safe. The GBH comes but always leaves hungry, knock on wood. I have them on my speed dial for any questions or problems.

My sympathies - I am so familiar with that sinking feeling as the great bird rises into the air. We have a large natural pond and get a heron 3 - 4 times a year. We tried wire around the edge but hated the look. I tried balloons and floating things, and we have a fake heron. Tried to train the dog to "check the pond" but he just gets excited and waits for me to go there with him! Even the goldfish either disappear or hide under the water plants. I am thinking - FAKE FISH! tiny motorized ones.....:)
