Mystery Clematis

I received a small potted clematis for Mother's Day and need help identifying it. It was grown by Hana Bay flowers and purchased at a local grocery store. It is loaded with beautifully simple, small, single, creamy-white flowers which have a slight, pleasant fragrance (you have to stick your nose in them to smell them). The flowers are maybe an inch and a half across and have 6 petals. The centers are a yellow that is not bold and has a hint of green to it, surrounded by a ring of what I think are stamens. I have taken a picture, but I can't figure out how to post it. The foliage of the plant reminds me of the cosmos seedlings coming up in my garden (the leaves are similar). Sorry I don't know all of the technical horticultural terms.

It is a very pretty plant, but not something I was expecting to receive. Now that I own it, I do feel an obligation to give it a good home, so I am trying to identify it and determine how big it will get and its cultural requirements. I have never grown clematis before. I understand there are some new varieties which stay quite small, and am wondering if this is one of those or what will become a full-sized climber.

By your description, it sounds like one of the several x cartmanii hybrids recently on the market. These feature highly dissected (for a clematis) foliage and a profusion of small, white, star shaped flowers, often quite early in the season and sometimes with a light fragrance.

x cartmanni is a cross of C. marmoraria and C. paniculata, both New Zealand natives. It is evergreen and tends not to be a real climber - does not produce the vining leaf petioles that are common to most clematis. It doesn't get very large, is often used as a sprawler, groundcover or even a hanging basket subject and will need some help to grow on a support or trellis. It is also a bit tender and I've not heard many reports about its longevity in our climate.

You can search under x cartmanii or any of a number of recent cultivars - 'Avalanche', 'White Carpet', 'White Abundance', 'Snow Angel' or the original xcartmanii hybrid, 'Joe'. 'Early Sensation' is similar but has a slightly different parentage, being a hybrid of paniculata and forestii. It also tends to have a creamier, almost yellow flowers.

I used to buy their plants when I was in retail and they did know cultivar names when questioned. Often their tags had them too. They usually use a big tag with a lot of information on it.
