Heritage Roses Northwest Show

I'm not a member of this group, but I did attend this last year and saw a lot of roses I'd never seen before. I post a flyer I was sent in case anyone is interested.

Sunday June 26, 2011 from noon to 5pm

Antique Rose Farm, Snohomish, WA

Heritage Roses Northwest has changed its annual rose show date to Sunday, June 26, 2011, from 12 noon till 5pm at the Antique Rose Farm, Snohomish.

Please make this change on your calendar. The original June 19, 2011 date has been cancelled.

We will be displaying historic and fragrant Old Garden Roses (OGRs) along with hybrid musks, polyanthas, rugosas, David Austin roses and other types of roses related to OGRs.

Exhibitors should bring their OGRs to the Antique Rose Farm from 9am-11:30 am. All roses must be labeled and in vases before noon when the show opens to the public. Come early, it will take longer than you think to prepare your displays.

There are two special programs scheduled:

2:00 p.m: "Permanent Rose Markers for Your Garden" will be presented by Evelyn Carter

4:00 p.m: "Mist System Propagation" will be demonstrated by Paul Kelly

Heritage Roses Northwest would like to invite non-members to bring their OGRs for exhibition or for help in identifying unnamed roses. Remember this is not a judged show; itÃ¯Â¿Â½s for display only.

We would love to have you come and enjoy these garden treasures.

Driving directions to the Antique Rose Farm

12220 Springhetti Road, Snohomish, Washington 98296

From the South: Take Hwy 405 to Hwy 522 and exit at Hwy 9. At the light, turn north (left) and follow Hwy 9 for about 10 miles. Near where Hwy 9 drops into the Snohomish River Valley, look for a stoplight at Broadway. Turn east (right) on Broadway. The next road to the left is Springhetti. Drive north on Springhetti approximately one mile, past the Christmas tree farm, to the Antique Rose Farm.

From the North: Take I-5 and exit at Hwy 2. Drive east to Hwy 9 and turn right onto it. Go over the Snohomish River Bridge to the next stoplight and turn left onto Marsh Rd. /Airport Rd. Make an immediate right turn onto Springhetti Road and continue one mile further south to the Antique Rose Farm.

Thank you for the post (and bumps!), harborrose.

I am going to try to make it. Lost 8 or 9 bushes over the last two winters and am on the hunt for deeply fragrant, highly disease-resistant replacements.

I hope you enjoy seeing all the cut roses that they'll have on display. If you don't mind once blooming roses, you might be interested in the albas or gallicas. They are northern European roses and are very hardy. There are some nice rugosas too. All very fragrant.

A reblooming pink Portland that is easy is Jacques Cartier; smells like roses and baby powder. It can handle a lot of cold too. Rose de Rescht is good.

Thanks for the tips. I don't mind once blooming roses and I have a list....somewhere......of some rugosas I'd like to try.

I lost a favorite (and well-established) DA Heritage, a couple of HT Just Joeys and even a rugosa Blanc Double de Coubert, as well as others. Whether it was just the cold or a combo cold + wet, I'm not sure. We live in Woodinville and it is colder by some 5 or 6 degrees than our last home on Lake Sammamish. I've never bothered with cold protection before, but will do so this year.

Do you do anything special to protect your roses? Are you going to the show?

I haven't had Rose de Rescht rust yet, so I'm watching for it. It is sure a pretty thing, though, so far.

I've read it shows up in late summer/early autumn around here and that it's an indication of dry soil and nitrogen deficiency. I don't know if that's true, but I plan to keep it well watered and fertilized to see if I can stave it off. I've never dealt with rust before so another new experience ahead of me, I guess.

Rain, I'm a a newcomer here and last winter was my first. I didn't winter protect any of the 80 odd roses I planted as soon as I got here. I lost a couple of them, mostly young own root tea roses, which are happiest in a lot of heat. The shrubs, hybrid musks and albas did beautifully. Some of the polyanthas had a lot of cane loss, but have grown back and are doing great.

I'm not planning to go this year again, but did see a lot of antiques I'd only seen in books before. It's a fur piece for me to travel, homebody that I am, anyway.
