when i was shopping trees.. to cover 5 acres ....

van wade suggested that mountain ash .. thought pretty trees ... were NOT consistent with growing hosta under them.. due to there fibrous, shallow root system ....

i recall an old friend who had one.. and could barely mow the lawn due to all the roots on the surface of the grass ...

not to mention the billions of seedlings ... making maples seem infertile... lol ..

perhaps mother nature did you a favor by crippling this tree...

now go do the right thing for you hosta.. and finish the job ...

ken, it was a mothers day gift, have to help it if I can.
What happened was a huge spruce fell on it and bent it in spring. It didnt crack but lost its top and some branches. It looked healthy all year despite its crew cut! Surprisingly it ended up with 7 bunches of berries, 3 more than last yr. BUT I have noticed that the berries are falling off, thats not normal. I went to check it and when I leaned my hand on it I noticed it wiggles. Now Im really concerned that some root damage happened and it wont survive the winter. I dont know what to do so Im looking for advice.

trees heal themselves .... we provide water.. but never fertilizer ... if you fert the lawn ... it will get what it needs ....

the upside if it dies ... it wasnt your fault ...

quit worrying about it.. its a tree ...in most cases .... you could cut it 2 inches from the ground.. and it will resprout and thrive ....

something tells me its not subject to EAB .. it might not be a true ash .... but i dont care to research it.. since i dont have one ...

The American Mountainash (Sorbus americana) isn't really an ash tree (Fraxinus sp.) and isn't affected by the Emerald Ash Borer.
