Are you sure it's a shasta daisy (Leucanthemum) you're looking for? Perhaps what you are looking for is a red coneflower (Echinacea).

Yep, it is a newly developed red shasta daisy, not a coneflower. Came from a fairly reliable gardening source- who is now on a very long vacation with no email! Supposed to be available only through a big gardening center for this year. Really would like to try even one plant this year....

Tanacetum coccineum would look more like it than Echinacea purpurea.

Sounds like an urban myth.

LOL!! They only just got lemon yellow shasta daisies on the market - no sign of any red flowering forms yet. And nothing in any of the trade mags, either.

Lots of red daisy-looking plants in the Asteraceae - red flowered echinaceas are hot properties right now, also red coreopsis (trying again for a reliably perennial form), the painted daisies (Tanacetum) bboy mentions, gerberas, gaillardia, etc. But no shastas.

Google brings up a few non-nursery sites mis-identifying pictures of gerberas as showing "red Shasta daisy".

The garden centre at Walmart has been selling a 'Red Shasta Daisy - Tender Perennial', though the label doesn't list the botanical binomial so it's anyone's guess as to what it actually is. However since it does state that it's a tender perennial, Gerbera would be my guess.
