toad I saw some 'shrooms on my lawn the other day when I mowed. They looked like white oblong eggs. I thought about putting in the compost as well but thought against ot not knowing if they were toxic. I have never heard of animals liking 'shrooms but what do I know. BTW...I am in Birch Bay.

There's a lot more out there that could be a problem for a cat than mushrooms.

I've never seen a cat try to eat a mushroom. I think they know better.

Thanks earthworm73 (hi neighbor!) and thesecretofjoy. I haven't seen my cat nibbling on anything but grass (and the voles he brings over to show me). It just crossed my mind that the 'shrooms could be a problem.

bboy--you're absolutely right that there are lots of dangers outside. But he stays pretty close to us, and we only let him outside when we're gardening. He'd been trying to escape outside for years and whenever he did, it was very difficult to get him back inside again. Now that we let him out, he freely comes in after an hour or so.

You should be able to compost any mushrooms without worry. A good composting process will neutralize any manner of toxins, including mushrooms, poisonous plants, most disease pathogens and a wide variety of chemical compounds as well. A great many plants are just as toxic, if not more so, than many mushrooms and they get composted regularly. If it grew, it can be composted!!

Mushrooms are just the fruiting bodies of various fungi and fungus is a natural digester of organic matter. It is a major component of any composting process.

Now I wish I would of put the ones I found the other day in the compost.

Mushroom compost is commonly sold (by the pickup load). The stuff I bought did have the occasional mushroom in it.

How about dogs? Won't they eat anything?
