These are so easy it's hard to believe you wouldn't get enough fun out of it to make it worthwhile even if it is getting a bit late (and it may not be anyway). I've seen seedlings of full-sized varieties that came up when or where they couldn't grow to full size produce little flowers on miniature plants so you will almost certainly get some production from seeds planted now regardless.

Earlier I looked at some interesting red-flowered ones on local racks, but haven't planted any yet - can't remember if I bought any packets at that time or left it until later (and forgot about it until just now!)

We have lots of bird feeders around so lots of sunflower seeds. Now the whole neighborhood has sunflowers everywhere! They keep coming up until October in this yard.

There are blue jays who actually bury the seeds on a ridge in a neighbor yard where they get really big and tall and then the blue jays feast on the plants.
