You need to get the sort of worms which live in a high organic media -- that is, your discarded kitchen trimmings and the like.

Also, you need to make "bedding" of something other than soil. I used to use shredded newspaper.

Thank you for the info. Later this afternoon, after I posted I went out to the bin. I stirred and tried to find those little critters with no success. I will do more research now to find the more proper worms. The red wigglers I presume. And definitely add the shredded news which I had thought of but not done yet. Another question: Is it worth the time?

Yes it's definitely worth the time. First, you get rid of the kitchen waste without loading up a landfill or sending it down the disposal where huge amounts of time and money will be spent to clean the water you used. Second, you get A#1 USDA Prime product from those worms. Worm poop is a great soil additive. Use it in the bottom of a planting hole, use it to help indoor plants, use it in potting soil.....it's great stuff. The best part is that once you great a method down, it's much easier than an outdoor compost bin.....and uses no water like the outdoor one.

The instructor explained why what you suggested won't work:

- Red wrigglers used in vermicomposting can live in warmer temperatures.

- Night crawlers and earthworms prefer the cooler temperatures found deeper in the soil and won't live long in our indoor room temperatures.
