wild berries ripening

While waiting for the Himalayan blackberries to ripen you might be interested in some other edible berries in western WA that seem to be in good supply.

Salal

-useful in muffins, pancakes, & even jams if you don't mind their less sweet than blueberry taste as well as the seeds. They have much smaller seeds than Oregon grape, so can be eaten fresh if desired.

Oregon grape

-rather tart berry & only good if you strain out the seeds, but makes a good jelly or syrup. I noticed our plants have quite a bit of good sized fruit this year probably due to our wet spring.

Red Huckleberry

-as sweet as they get now & will only whither & fall off or be eaten by birds the rest of the summer.

-especially tasty when mixed with other berries or even fruits like apple, pear, or peaches in a crisp and since they're such small berries it takes a long time to pick enough for a pie. You could try washing & freezing them until you have enough for a recipe.
